Stuttgart worth a few hours visit?

I'm spending a couple of days in Munich before traveling down to Switzerland. Stuttgart is on the train route. Just wondering if it's worth a stop in - for a few hours for lunch and a quick walk around en route, or would getting there late the night before and having the whole morning there be better? Alternatively I can not stop there, and take an early train to maximize daylight hours throught eh Alps (via Visp, not Lausanne).

Just plan on walking around, browsing neighborhoods, exploring the local beer and food!

If Stuttgart is worth a quick stop - any suggestions of a bar/restaurant for some decent German food not very far from the Hbf?

Thanks!

As you probably have to connect in Zurich on your trip to Visp, why don't you take the EC from Munich to Zurich? It's faster and you don't have to go through Stuttgart.

This answers your first question:

No.

The archive of the Lufthansa-Forum will provide you with advice how to kill 46 minutes in Stuttgart and where to buy Moet&Chandon near the train station :)

+1. Being Stuttgart born, I cannot think of anything interesting near the train station which would be worth a visit during a stopover (unless you want to engage in the riots accompanying the controversial railway station makeover, of course).

Thank you! I'll just pass on through then!

The "Savings Fares" on Banh.de are not routing via Zurich, so I'm stuck with the long way around!

Oh please. So Stuttgart is not Paris, but neither is any other German city. It's perfectly OK for a couple of hours, not any better or any worse than any other larger German city. IMO it's nicer than Frankfurt, and not as f*ugly as Cologne...

I agree on Frankfurt.. but honestly, what would you really do in a couple of hours in Stuttgart? A walk around the Schlossgarten? Not quite enjoyable with all the occupants and their tents (granted, they'll be removed around mid January, but then the construction will start).. a visit to the Fernsehturm? Way too far away. Shopping on Königstraße? Nothing you coulnd't have in any other major city. In Cologne, there's at least the Cathedral and a couple of breweries to visit near the station, if you see my point.

I've got an upcoming business trip to Boeblingen and will find myself arriving in STR in the morning. I'm also looking for some things I could do in Stuttgart between the time of my arrival, and when I could expect to be able to check into my Boeblingen area hotel that afternoon.

Since I'm arriving ahead of my business meetings, brewery visits sound like a good plan. I'll be using taxis or mass transit for transport.

I was in Stuttgart last summer. It isn't fabulous (and I think Frankfurt is definitely more interesting than Stuttgart), but there are a few things. The highlight for me was definitely the Mercedes-Benz museum -- definitely recommend it. It would take several hours to visit and isn't far on the S-bahn. There is also a Porsche museum but I didn't have time to visit it.

I did go to the state art museum (Stuttgart is the capital of whatever German state), which is reasonably interesting.

Well, the journey from STR into town takes about half an hour (there are two lines of S-Bahn trains which will depart towards the center every 30 minutes, however, two trains will depart within 10 minutes, then you'll have to wait 20 minutes for the next one). To go to the Mercedes museum, you'll have to change trains (S1 towards Plochingen) somewhere between Vaihingen and Bad Cannstatt (I'd recommend Feuersee as it's the least busy station, but quite often, there's a weird stench around) and get off at Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion.

Breweries are not really an option in Stuttgart (unlike Cologne), but I could recommend "Sophie's Brauhaus" (S-Bahn station Stadtmitte, exit to the direction you were coming from) - not sure whether they'll already be open around noon. If you want to have lunch in Swabian style, there will be a few options around Schillerplatz (especially "Alte Kanzlei" at Schlossplatz, S-Bahn station Stadtmitte, exit in the direction your train will be leaving when coming from the airport).

A taxi ride from the airport into town will be around EUR 40 and will also take about half an hour. If there's anything in particular you want to see, just ask - I'm quite familiar with the area (and so are others), so we'll definitely be able to help you.

I`ve been to Stuttgart a few times on business trip and seen some things.
I`d say - not really worth it.
Anyway, some ideas for you.
