Beer festival in August

Hi guys
Hope you can help.
Have done Oktoberfest before and have no desire to repeat it.
I have heard that many of the smaller festivals are a lot more enjoyable.

I was recently chatting to a guy about attending one this year with a group of my friends. He mentioned it was in August, about 45 minutes or so from Munich heading towards Austria.

I have searched google and the such but have been left confused! (not overly difficult!!)

Could anyone help and point me in the right direction and all tips are extremely welcome!

Thanks
MickV

He must have meant the Herbstfest in Rosenheim that happened Aug 26-Sep 11 this year: http://www.herbstfest-rosenheim.de/

From the countdown clock it look like it will start the weekend of Aug 26 2012.

Oktoberfest in Munich is one of a kind. All around Bavaria you will find small events around spring (first week of may) and late summer.

A big but untouristy one is the Plärrer in Augsburg, August 24 - September 9, 2012.

Many Bavarian towns have their kirwa fests during that time period. Nothing quite so crazy as Oktoberfest of course, but still a good time.

August might be a little early for Nuremberg's Herbstvolksfest, but it is a good time, and much smaller than the Oktoberfest madness.

Not the one you are talking about, but Bamberg has their Sandkerwa in August. Not technically a beer festival but beer from the 9 breweries in town plus a dozen or so nearby villages. Highly recommend it.

...smaller... August

Another option is the traditional beer halls of Munich and beer gardens such as the Chinesischer Turm and Augustiner Bierhalle amoung many others.

These places are much more civilized and relaxed, especially the out door beer gardens in August. Beautiful sun, in a park with some quality beer.

Just a though.

Whenever go east of Munich, you are heading towards Austria. You cannot miss it. :D

There are quite a few local and small beer festivals, even east of Munich. About 45 Minutes away is Rosenheim, which is already mentioned. Other locations which are about 45 minutes east of Munich are Mühldorf am Inn, Frasdorf and Kolbermoor. Dates for these festivals are to be found at http://www.festzeltbetriebe-bayern.d...2012/view/2012. The largest one will be in Rosenheim, the 2nd largest one in Mühldorf am Inn. The webpage for the later one is http://www.muehldorfer-volksfest.de/. Both locations do have very good road & train access from Munich. PM me if you need more details.
