One night - first time in Munich - hotel info request
 

I arrive MUC sunday evening 5pm, have a flight out Monday at 4pm. Any chance I can stay someplace that is easy transit, and might offer me a place for a beer or meal on Sunday night, and perhaps a quick museum or nice walk Monday am? I have never been to Munich before!!!! All thoughts welcome....

I would either propose the Ctiy Hilton or the Holiday Inn City Centre. Both are on top of the Rosenheimer Platz subway station which is 25 minutes away from the airport by direct public transit (S8) and 5 Minutes to Marienplatz (every train) in the very heart of the city. Plenty of restaurants and even a Biergarten in walking distance.

Get a hotel downtown. The Hilton and Holiday Inn are good choices. You can even walk downtown and there is the "Deutsches Museum" right next to it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsches_Museum

There are also some nice Hotels around the Mainstation (Le Meridien, Sofitel etc.), but probably more expensive than the Hilton/Holiday Inn.

I average about 20-30 nights a year in Munich hotels. These are only at the 5* places so I cannot really comment on the other, except for their location..here are my brief comments:

- Mandarin Oriental: probably best in Munich
- Kempinski Vier Jahreszeiten: excellent location, make sure you get a renovated room
- Koenigshof: good transport location, nice rooms, excellent restaurant, friendly family owners
- Sofitel: good transport location, great rooms
- Meridien: rubbish rooms, terrible hotel
- Bayerischer Hof: wonderful hotel if you get a refurbished room
- Holiday Inn: location is awful
- Marriott: I met a friend there once; terrible rooms, horrible location
- Arabella Sheraton: rooms ok, location not great

I have stayed a couple of times in hotels near the main station which can be directly reached by the S8 from the airport. The hotels are mostly in walking distance.

Schiller5 - less than 5 min walk from the main station.
I like the small kitchen in each room and the convenient location if you travel by public transport. WIFI is free of charge. Breakfast is very good and included.

A little bit further from Schiller5, in the same street, is Hotel Royal. This is rather basic, but it served my purpose of staying overnight, getting a breakfast in the morning and be at the main station quickly again. Breakfast was ok, WIFI is free. My single room was very small (but ok for one night).

Hotel Cocoon - rather close to the main station, but 1 stop away by S-Bahn. I like the charme of the 70s. WIFI is free of charge. Breakfast is very good and 9 EUR/person. Beware that rooms are small.

And to add a chain hotel: NH Hotel Deutscher Kaiser. I slept like a baby because of their wonderful mattress. As far as I remember, WIFI and breakfast are not included.

Not really helpful because there are quite a few. The HI City Center is is a good location, HI Munich North is at the far end of Schwabing, about a km away from the subway, the others I do not know.

Try to stay near the Marienplatz, as it is very central. But Munich is a great city with a great S-Bahn and U-bahn system. You could try to Priceline the Courtyard Marriott near the Hauptbahnhof ( train station). Its nice, clean and close to most stuff. Check biddingfortravel.com for latest rates.

I meant the one north of Schwabing. I have not been to the one downtown.

Be aware that many of these smaller hotels in Munich don't have A/C in the rooms !

A few years ago I sent some friends to the NH hotel (because of it's convenient location) : they couldn't sleep because of the high temperature in the room and the unability to open the windows completely (for security reasons). Maybe it improved in the meantime.

I stayed at the Hilton City Center a few weeks ago. Great location (right on top of the Rosenheimer Platz subway station). Can take an elevator to lobby without even going outside. Two stops to the City Center about four to main train station. All very quick to get to. Catch the S8 to/from airport at this same station. Don't know that you can beat the location as long as you are willing to use the public transportation.

Front desk very nice and helpful. Room quiet with AC. Generally quiet area. Nice executive lounge well staffed with lots of food and cold and hot drinks. They have restaurant in building. I did not use it. The executive lounge had really nice continental breakfast.

I will stay there again when I am in town.

There is a HI on the Leopoldstraße in Schwabing. There is no HI north of Schwabing.

If time permits, I would do a Mike's Bike tour. I think there may be two hour tours.

I'd stay at the City Hilton. Monday morning check out and leave the bags at the Hilton buy a Single person Tageskarte Gesamtnetz for €10.80 from the machine at Rosenheimerplatz S-Bahn go to Marienplatz have a quick beer in the Hofbrauhaus(yes it's touristy but so what if you've never been to Munich) then go to the Viktualienmarkt and sit in the small biergarten there(one of the few that you can guarantee is open as long as it isn't absolutely lashing down rain) and get some great food from the stalls and watch the world go by. Perhaps even climb the tower of Old Peter for a great view. Then go back to the Hilton for about 1:00 P.M. grab your bags and get back on the S-8 to the airport for your 4:00 flight. I've done this so many times with friends and solo it's a great routine for our last day in Munchen.:)

If you have more than a beer make sure you go to the toilet at the Hilton before going to the airport as it's about 40 minutes on the toiletless S-Bahn.:D

I have a few days at the hotel Azimut in Munich. this is through a tour group so have no real choice. Has anyone stayed here or know enough about it to tell the best way to get there from the main train station?
