Layover in Munich

Hello- My husband and I have a layover in Munich, arriving at 12:30 with our next flight takes off at 9:50.

How big is the airport and are customs cumbersome?

What is the bet way to get in and out of the city from the airport fast or is there a subway and is it faster? Should we hire a driver to take us around or are the sites central and walkable? We would like to maximize our time in Munich, walk around the city, shop and eat.

Thanks!

The airport is big, but immigration is not cumbersome. Since you've a layover, you will not be getting your luggage, so customs should not be an issue (you will have to do your customs at your final destination only).

The easiest is to take the subway to downtown Munich, this is the cheapest and the fastest way. Follow the green "S" signs in the airport to the airport subway stations.

There are two subway lines into town, it takes about 45 minutes from the airport to downtown. Take a "Partner Tagesticket ganzes Netz" (partner day ticket for the whole network, 19.60 EURO), do not try to understand the standard ticketing system in Munich ("Streifenkarte"), as understanding its regulations requires more than a PhD :p. Plus, you can also use the trams. With the partner day ticket, up to 5 adults can use all types of public transportation in Munich for one whole day.

Downtown Munich is walkable, and there are trams and busses everywhere.
