Best Restaurants in Hamburg?

What are some of the best restaurants - for both German and other International food - in Hamburg? Preferably located near the Le Meridien but happy to travel within the city for something good.

Appreciate the help.

Try the website of the Gault Millau restaurant guide, which is geared towards more of a haute cuisine audience. The page is only available in German, but if you search for restaurants in Hamburg you'll get a sorted list of the best and most expensive restaurants at the top together with their address and a Google Maps overview of where they are located in the city.

I'm from Hamburg. It pretty much depends on your priorities, what you qualify as a good restaurant. Is it just the food and service or maybe also exciting location, harbour view, entertainment etc.???
Is it for pleasure or business; lunch or dinner?
The *-restaurants mentioned in previous link of the Gault Millau are all excellent, but you will end up most likely with a bill around 150 - 200EUR per person. But usually its "only" restaurant - nothing special location or entertainment.

That's only true for the high-end restaurants on the list (the ones with 17-18 points out of the max. 20). Prices should go down the farther down on the list you go.

One thing to keep in mind:
- All restaurants with 13 points or more are great
- Those with 15 points or more are REALLY great
- Those with 17 points or more are REALLY, REALLY great
- and anything at 19 or above will blow you mind away (quality and price-wise) :)

Hi,

Thanks for the information, this is great.

I am looking for a mix of places, will be here for several weeks. Some days, a very nice dinner. Other days, more fun and economical places would be preferred. Nothing too stuffy that requires business formal attire.

The East Hotel has been recommended to me several times - any thoughts?

Thank you.

For everyday eating I recommend to walk to the „Lange Reihe“ street, which is ~100m from your “Meridien” hotel. You will find dozens of good restaurants. I like very much the Turnhalle there (http://www.turnhalle.com/). You will also find a good choice of many restaurants on the “Grossneumarkt”, which is a little bit further away from the hotel.

From the Millau list I like in this sequence the “Bullerei”, “Fischereihafen”,”Osteria due”, “Rive”, “Carls” and “Vlet”. All of them are reasonable priced, but reservation is recommended.

If you like a maritime ambience with some sightseeing, then walk along the Elbe river in the “Hafencity” or near “Landungsbrücken” in the Portuguese quarter where you will see also lot of restaurants. Famous are also the historic “Krameramtsstuben” near the “Michel”-church and the historic "Deichstrasse" with also many restaurants.

The EAST-Hotel and restaurant is a little bit hip and stylish. It is located within the worlds famoust red-light district, but it is serious.

My family is from Hamburg. Here are some restaurants which come to mind. Most of them are nicer places where we have had "celebrations" or the like.
  • Hotel Jacobs, out on the Elbe
  • Haerlin, in the Vierjahreszeiten
  • Hotel Atlantic (our family's main stay for about 50 years :) )
  • the restaurant up on the Sullberg -- can;t remember the name
  • Landhaus Scherrer
  • Friesen Keller (down at the water level, one block in front of city hall [Rathaus])
  • Eichtal out in Wandsbek
  • Fisherreihafen Hamburg
  • Sunday brunch -- you have to go to the fish market!!!
  • Hotel Hafen Hamburg -- if the weather is nice, overlooks the whole harbor
  • Tschebull - Austrian/South German food
  • East
  • Faehrhaus Oevelgoenne
  • Carls (or Karls?)
  • there's a new modern restaurant down on the Elbe. The chef also has a TV show. I can't remember his name, but when we were in Hamburg last spring, everyone knew about it. Something like Tafelhaus.
  • if you like watching the ships come into harbor, go up-river to Faehrhaus Willkomm Hoeft (spelling?); easy walking from the S-bhan station Wedel. Go in good weather. They welcome each ship with that ship's national anthem, report on the stats of the ship, where is is coming from, etc. Upon departure, they give a grand send off, etc.

This is great information, really appreciate it. This past week I went to Fisherreihafen and East. Really liked East, Fisherreihafen not so much - but definetly a nice place to go.

Will certainly check out your other recommendations - Haerlin is next.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry9630/5.0.0.975 Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)

Any new restaurants out there? Been to just about all of the places recommended here and most were great.

Looking for something on the lighter side (eg, no schnitzel or sausage, delicious as they may be).

Any recommendations for casual dining with a teenager?

kevinsac Jun 27, 2011 5:37 pm

Is he old enough for the Reeperbahn? (No, it's not all x-rated, especially during the day)

Also, for historical purposes, I forget to mention The Old Commercial Roo, directly across the street from St Michael's Church.

From my list above, casual for a teen:
  • Friesen Keller, 1 block from the City Hall (Rathaus) -- one of my favorite casual German restaurants in the city
  • Sunday morning? go to the fischmarkt
  • If you like watching the ships come and go, take the S-bahn up to Wedel and eat on the patio at Faehrhaus Willkomm Hoeft
  • Closer in, on the harbor, Landungsbruecken high enough to overlook pedestrians
  • High on the hill, overlooking the harbor, eat on the patio at Hafen Hamburg

How casual?

There's a decent sushi place on the top floors of Europa Passage. Casa de Roma is decent for Italian and Vasco de Gama for Portuguese - both near the Le Meridien.

The Pavillion overlooks the inner Alster and has decent American style food IIRC.

Theres a Hofbrauhaus, which is casual and gets a good crowd.

Eisensteins is good for Italian and pizzas.
