Hotels in Darmstadt
 

Could anyone please recommend a decent hotel in Darmstadt?

I need tobe there for a couple of weeks in January

Trawling the web hasn't revealed anything too impressive :(

There is not an aweful lot of chain hotels in Darmstadt, so you will need to look for independant hotels.

The Ramada seems decent and has a fairly good location.

I've stayed at the Maritim KonferenzHotel by the train station. The hotel was quite nice, though pricy. I was on a business trip and it was within my per diem so that was acceptable.

Whether the location is convenient depends on where in Darmstadt you need to be. (It was within easy walking distance for my purposes.)

if you're looking at city center, I've stayed at the Bockshaut located on the markertplace and across from the ole rathaus. it's a wonderful historic place right city center with easy access to bus/street car lines. the rooms vary in quality...so it may help to contact them directly if you're going to be there awhile to make sure you have one of the larger, more decent rooms. I was pretty lucky to get one of them...but ran into someone else who said their room was very small and not great.

also, both the Ramada and the Best Western are fairly decent chain hotels in city center.

Darmstadt's a wonderful town with some wonderful sites and food. wish I was going back soon.

Do not, I reperat do not stay at the Maritim Hotels!!! I'm on a project in Darmstadt since April and tested all the larger hotels in Darmstadt.

The best hotel is the Welcome Hotel Welcome Hotel Darmstadt. The hotel is new, modern, clean and has very good service. It is located right in the middle of Darmstadt and you get every where very easy. Are you traveling on company expanses? The Welcome Hotel has for many companies which are located in Darmstadt like Merck, Deutsche Telekom special rates. So ask them if they have special rates.

If the Welcome Hotel is booked try the Ramada. It is clean and the staff is very careing.

The Maritim Hotles on the other are expansive and in bad shape.

If you have a car there are a few other hotels which are outside of Darmstadt. The NH Mörfelden-Frankfurt and the Holiday Inn are okay but you need a car. The last alternative would be staying in Frankfurt close to Central station and taking the Train to Darmstadt in the morning. Takes about 20 minutes.

Caspritz78's advice is spot on.
If you are trying to save a buck, there are several small, basic hotels on the outskirts of the city.
If you can get a decent rate at the Maritim's, there are okay, but usually their rates far exceed their value. If you do have to stay at one, the one further from the train station seems slightly better.

Maritim is not a bad choice

Some facts about the two Martitim Hotels.

1) The older one Maritim Konferenzhotel (the brown one closer to the main station)

- If you like the dark brown style of the 80ties and beds which feel like hammocks this is your hotel.

2) The newer Maritim Rhein Main (the glass building)
- If you have a room towards the back and you are on the lower floors you will think that the cargo trains which run directly behind the hotel are taking a detour through your room.
- The beds are hammocks.
- In some rooms the wallpaper was already getting loose at the edges.

Both hotels are below standard and desperately need a renovation. I avoid them at all costs.

You forgot about the yummy 34 euro breakfasts.
If the pricing is in the same ballpark, stay at the Welcome Hotel. If pricing is a factor, stay at the Ramada.

I like eating at the Braustübl, the one across from the train station. It is the local brewery's restaurant. Also, for good German food, I like the Ratskeller. The Pig's knuckle is awesome. It is in the main square area.

Bumping this thread up. Any recent recommendations? Will be there in late December. Town center, no car, pref little to no stairs/steps. Have stayed at the Ibis, where rooms are . . . cramped for two people, and beds purgatorially hard. We don't mind basic, but is there anything better, or is this it?

I regularly stay at the InterCity at the station. You get a free city pass so public transport is included if you want to go places. The hotel is fairly new (less than 2yrs) and fairly cheap. Otherwise the comments above still hold. Welcome for center, Ramada a little out of the center and InterCity at the station [with free public transport].

I wholeheartedly agree with the recommendations above about the Welcome Hotel. It's been a few years since I lived there, so it's possible conditions have changed, but the hotel is relatively new and very well-located -- less than a 5 minute walk to the Luisenplatz. I don't really like the stretch of the Rheinstraße between the Hbf and the center at night, so for that reason alone I would pass on the Maritim.

(Completely off-topic, but my favorite Döner shop is in Darmstadt. Getting hungry just thinking about it...)

if not too late, stayed at the Best Western right near Luisenplatz (town center) last year and really liked it. Great rooms, comfortable beds, very friendly and helpful front desk and breakfast staff, very tasty and varied breakfast, and very good prices. nice location on a quiet street with several shops, restaurants, etc. the layout's a bit odd...elevator up to lobby level, etc...but I would stay there again without hesitation.
