Casino membership?

The Valley Forge Casino (and Resort?) had their grand opening this past weekend. I had a couple hours to kill and wanted to check it out, although really with very little intention of gambling.

Much to my surprise, I was sent to the rewards desk where I was told I needed to pay to get in. I was too shocked to hear the different options but the cheapest one I thought I heard was $20. I've since checked out the website and have found that if I would have spend $10 at the little food court area, I could have gotten in for free...if the guy at the desk would have explained that, I might have done it. (guests at the hotel get in for free, as do others who are attending an event there)

Anyway, my question. Is it common for casinos to charge an entry fee? I have limited experience with casinos, but this was definitely a surprise.

I did glance over the floor while I was in the building. Didn't seem like alot of square footage. Don't know that I would make a trip back unless there is another floor.

Since there are many casinos in the Philadelphia area, expect this dumb idea to be gone within the month -- along with whoever thought it up.

In the Kansas City area, all of the casinos used to charge a fee to enter the casino, but it was only in the range of $2-$5. This included Harrah's.
It had something to do with paying the state of Missouri, which was collecting a per guest fee.

The entrance fees did not last long.
