Flying out of Provo
I have a flight out of there next week. It looks like Frontier is operating out of an FBO. Anyone have any experience flying in or out? How's the parking? Check-in? Security? waiting space? etc....

I was very impressed. Flying out of Provo (since I live in Orem) was convienient. I called my husband the moment we landed and by the time he got to the airport, I was ready with my luggage.

Provo is miniscule. It amazes me that anything flies out of there aside from crop dusters and the occassional business jet. I wouldn't worry about "fighting the traffic/crowds."

The new ramp configuration will be open in late fall, but until then, motorists wishing to access west Provo, Utah Lake State Park, and the airport should use University Parkway to Geneva Road as an alternate route. Local traffic can use Center Street or 820 North. All other ramps at the interchange will remain open during this time. Turn lanes at the intersection of Center Street and 1600 West will be removed, but turns will be permitted from the through lanes. Please allow extra time to travel through the construction area and detours and plan your arrival at the airport accordingly. |
After flying in/out of SLC this weekend, and having to wait forever to be packed like sardines on the bus to the economy lot, I'm looking forward to trying out Provo.

Review - Provo Airport
As the OP, I wanted to check back in and report my experience using the Provo Airport.
Parking is very easy and convenient, but payment could be confusing. They have just constructed a new lot right outside the building. I got there at 7:10 on a Friday morning for an 8:25 flight and parked, literally, 50 feet from the front of the building. You have to pre-pay for parking. It’s $3.50 per day and you punch in to the machine how many days you will be gone and input what space you’re parked in. There’s no need to put anything on your dash. Further away from the “terminal” beyond the paved/pay parking, there is a field where a decent number of people seemed to be parking for free. I chose to pay for parking since I was going to be gone for 11 days and I was driving my wife’s little car and didn’t want to get stuck in mud if it rained. The “terminal” is a FBO that they added a security area and waiting area on the side. The waiting area is pretty cramped if the flight is full at all. However, it took probably five minutes from the time I parked to (1) pay for parking, (2) check-in and (3) clear security. There is no jet bridge. Boarding is done via a mobile ramp that you walk up to board the plane. Arriving was just as easy. From the time we touched down, I was in my car in five minutes. I didn’t have any checked luggage, so I’m not sure how that process works. However, it appears that they load up a cart and drive it around to the front of the building (near the parking lot and pickup area) and you get your luggage off the cart. All in all, it was very convenient. The flight attendant on the way back did say the loads haven’t been very high, so I wonder how long the flights will continue. For people in Utah County and parts south, this is a great option. I live in southern Salt Lake County, so it was about a 40 minute drive. However, when you factor in the time you would spend parking, riding the shuttle, checking in, clearing security, etc., it may be quicker to fly out of Provo. Plus parking is cheaper. |
