Trouble Checking In

Trying to check my wife in for her return flight today - ATL-DEN-SLC, and I get this message:

"There was a problem processing your request. We are unable to complete your check-in due to technical difficulties. Please proceed to the airport for check-in."

This comes up after I put in the reservation code, decline stretch seating and indicate she's not checking any bags.

Is this an actual technical problem, or is it a "security" issue and they're requiring her to check-in in person? And if it's the former, do you think I'll be able to check her in later today (she departs at 7:00)?

Maybe it's worth a phone call.

I can recall an identical problem a number of years ago.

The agent at the ticket counter told me a passenger may be randomly selected for airport check in due to security purposes. That was the one and only time I ever had that happen.

There are a number of reasons you may not be able to check-in online. If you booked one segment as Frontier and one as Midwest, regardless of who operates the flight, you cannot check-in online. If that's not the case, the most likely situation is that your birth date information did not get passed to the Department of Homeland Security computers prior to check-in. That's a frequent occurrence and the check-in agent has to do it manually before the computer will issue a boarding pass.
