Checking skis and boots

First timer on F9 in two weeks, returning DRO-DEN-SEA with a ski bag, a boot bag, and a carry on. (On AS connecting to UA outbound.)

My boot bag is a large, rolling duffel - it holds boots as well as my clothes, etc.

How strict is F9 with the skis + boots in a boot bag = one item rule?

Ordinarily, when flying to ski, I fly AS/QX w/ status (or WN) and check whatever. But my thinking is: can I get away with padding my skis with my ski clothes in the ski bag, and putting the boots alone into the now-larger-than-purely-necessary boot bag?

Skis and boots are considered to be one bag on Frontier. However, if the two bags are ridiculously large on their own and can't be identified as ski's and boots, you might have some trouble convincing the agent otherwise.
