Check the tripadvisor hotel reviews for bedbugs, and perhaps consider it in your choice of hotel.

My family had to deal with it once, and it took a crew of several people working for 7-10 days to fully clean and disinfect the house. It cost 2k euros in a cheap country, in the US it would have been easily $10-20k.

If the hotel has no bedbug reports on tripadvisor, it should be relatively safe. Do a check yourself as well, and put your luggage in the shower, if you want, and keep it zipped. You can also put your clothes in plastic bags or big (1 gallon) ziplock bags inside the suitcase, for added protection. This is what I do these days, after the big ordeal. It also looks much more neat and easy to pack. Check the bag after your return for anything suspicious.

I wonder if luggage racks are as effective as putting bags in the shower or tub. If they can't climb into a bathtub, how are they going to climb the legs of a luggage rack?

Reading a bunch of other travel forums, there are a lot of posts from people worried about bedbugs and essentially no posts from people getting bit or even seeing them.

Fear has ruled the world for centuries;

One of my colleagues brought home bedbugs from the Okko hotel at Gare de l'Est in early September. I stayed in another room on the same night and was fortunately not impacted. It was a painful and costly encounter as she has had to get medical treatment and decontaminate her home. Hotel staff did acknowledge the presence of bedbugs but have failed to compensate my colleague to her satisfaction.

I am actually happy (not the right word) to read this because there have been so many reports of bedbugs in the media and yet not a single person on any of the travel frums had reported anything. It is really not a big deal in Paris but it is good to know that it is not a complete myth.

Bummer. I had to cancel my trip due to some work issues in the US taking precedence...

The bedbugs will have to wait for me until December.

It might not be the right season anymore.

If you search Paris + bedbugs, you'll see there actually have been quite a few articles on this topic, particularly in the beginning of October. I, too, would like to hear from recent travelers to France or those planning a trip to hear what they think -- and whether this is in fact overblown. Props to the original poster for bringing this up... is this is a legit concern with sitting on the Metro, pervasive at all sorts of hotels, etc. etc?. Has it changed anyone else's plans to travel to France in the near future? Thanks in advance.

Nobody is talking about bedbugs anymore. It was a one week clickbait issue. Obviously there are some bedbugs in Paris, just like any other city in the world. I sit without fear on the metro every day. Hotels are another problem because you international travelers are obviously crawling with bedbugs. Should we go back to the covid rules and close hotel rooms for 24 hours between each customer to disinfect them? Then they could double the rates.

What ? You aren't concerned about the risque of attacks ? No one talks about bedbugs anymore, like every other média frenzy as mentioned earlier.

Happy to report from France (currently sitting in Paris )

both of our hotels have been without bed bugs (The Marriott la Caserne de Chazny in Reims and the Marriott Paris Opera)

only thing I’ve seen that would suggest any issue was some street signs threatening $135 euro fine for street-side mattress disposal

The Parisian bedbugs during the Olympics are collectible items, btw, they come in their own bijoux boxes with certificates of authenticity...

Just picked up my mom from the airport yesterday. She found one bedbug in her room at Ibis Republique. Switched rooms in the morning and she did not see anything else for the last 3 days.

Other than that, no issues taking the metro, RER, bus etc etc

Only one bedbug, sounds like an orphan, abandoned by his family...:p
