Uber at CDG

I’m flying to CDG for the first from MIA this week. Is it difficult to find the uber pick area after I clear customs and immigration? Should I assume of course the uber driver speaks zero English?

JMontpelier Nov 21, 2021 8:10 pm

CDG is somewhere I prefer taking a standard taxi. Uber is not always reliable from the airport (ok to CDG). There are flat-rate fares and no tipping required: €53 to Right Bank and €58 to Left Bank. Information here --

+1 on JMontpelier's suggestion. From the airport to Paris, Taxi is definitely preferable to Uber - likely cheaper, definitely faster.

Regarding English - it could be hit or miss, but if you've got your destination written down, I think you can count on them being able to read. :D

I’m staying at the Hilton opera and uber is 36 euros. What would the taxi be?

enviroian Nov 21, 2021 9:09 pm

Is there a train or metro from cdg to the Hilton opera area?

thank you.

The RER B goes from CDG to Gare du Nord. The trip takes approximately 35 minutes and the fare is approximately €10. You can also take the TGV, it is faster, only about 20 minutes, but does not run as frequently and it is almost twice as expensive.

I doubt there is a single international airport in Europe that does not have good public transport connections. And the transport options are always listed on the website.
Uber on the other hand is not a given in Europe.

What is also pretty common in Europe is that there exists an on-line public transport planner that can just plan between any combination of stops, land marks and street addresses. For Paris you can find it here:
https://www.ratp.fr/en/
Note: RER uses letters, and Metro uses numbers. RER is generally more modern than the metro, so with luggage the better option.

You can just enter "CDG" as start and the street address (or even "Hilton Opera") in the destination, and presto: You get instructions. Navigating the Paris RER and Metro is easy.

TGV does indeed call at CDG, but you cannot take it to get to the city...

If you are going to the Hilton Opéra and are looking for public transportation, you may just want to take the Roissybus which terminates right at Opéra Garnier, within walking distance from the hotel. I think the price is around 14 euros per person.

Otherwise I agree CDG is one of those places I would rather take a regular taxi than Uber. G7 is one the largest taxi companies in Paris and you can book the cab via their app à la Uber. The driver will wait for you at arrivals carrying a sign with your name. This service involves a small surcharge but I always find it's worth it.

Berline was one of the options given. It was 65 euros to the Hilton. Uber X was 40. I didn’t see G7 though.

Take a taxi (flat rate anyways) or just the RER.

Piggying back off this thread. Will be traveling with an infant which means lots of stuff (luggage + car seat and stroller). What's the availability like for a van or a larger vehicle with taxi or am I better off with Uber so I can request an Uber XL or other arrangements? Thanks!

enviroian Nov 23, 2021 11:56 am

From what I've read the price delta between uber and taxi isn't too much and also you have to contact the uber driver to see where he is going to be since they don't have a dedicated area to park/stand. Also they can't use bus lanes which apparently taxi's can.

I have never used the underground/metro/trains in Paris and I'm not about to start Thursday morning. Just the thought of it gives me angst as I hate not knowing a system (like I do the back of my hand with London underground and Chicago el).

It does however seem to make sense to take uber back to the airport as I'll be at a hotel and will get dropped off at departures.

Thanks for the feedback.

On my last trip we used G7 via their app because we needed a van. There was no problem in finding the pickup location.

As to language, it might be a good idea to find out how to ask in French to be transported to your destination.

Not too big of a problem. Get in the normal taxi queue. When you get to the front say you need a larger vehicle. One will generally come by within a few minutes.

I used Uber at CDG last October to go to the Hilton Opera.
Based on your location in CDG, the Uber app will direct you to the nearest Door # to go outside where you look for you uber car.
It was easy for me since I speak French.
The cost for me was US$54.

Never had any problem using Uber from CDG (and I took a lot of them)

enviroian Nov 28, 2021 10:20 am

Follow up from my trip. I took the Taxi as recommended from CDG to Hilton Opera and the cost as advised was 53 Euros. I took Uber back yesterday and the cost was 47 euros. No problem on either end.

No one knows what Uber costs until you bring up the trip when you’re ready to go. I doubt you will often find a 36€ fare from CDG to mid-Paris on an early weekday morning.

I used to love Uber in Paris but several trips over the last month have me soured. Out of the way, indirect routing, sometimes due to lack of access to taxi lanes and sometimes for no apparent reason, turn 12€ trips into 25€ trips.

I came into CDG 2C earlier this week. The Uber pick up area was in the short term parking garage on level -2. I took an elevator down and waited by aisles I&J. The information didn't seem to have been transmitted to my driver because he kept asking where I was and he seemed to be on the arrival level until I mentioned I was in the garage.

This is a very frequent problem in many airports around the world : Uber app is telling you a pickup location and the drivers want somewhere else more convenient.

And in this case with the fun bonus of a language barrier!

I've had ok experiences with Uber at CDG. I speak French which perhaps helps, but I've found the drivers quite helpful. I took one last summer during a strike action which blocked all taxis and Ubers from the arrivals area. My Uber driver contacted me through the app and suggested meeting upstairs at the drop off area. Worked perfectly. I left all the people waiting for taxis downstairs.

Then there is the fact that I'm in the Uber rewards program, usually at Platinum level and sometimes Diamond. So I'm a bit locked in. :)
