Charging your phone in Paris cafes or shops

In the United States, it is considered perfectly normal to plug your phone charger into an electrical outlet in a Starbucks or even some small restaurants. Can you do this in Paris?

Most places will do it for you if you ask. Electrical sockets are often out of sight or out of reach. It might be pointed out that all of the bus and taxi shelters in Paris have a USB socket for charging devices.

Bring your own powerbank. They are not that expensive. And you can charge everywhere.

I don't think there's anywhere left in the world where I would give it a second thought these days. If there's a spare socket in or near a table, it's fair game. I can't see anyone batting an eyelid.

If it's out of reach or behind the bar, or you have to unplug something, then ask!

I've seen people doing this in hotel F&B outlets and certainly CDG airport lounges, but I can't recall that I've noticed it in cafes and certainly not in shops. In older cafes, etc., I wouldn't expect to find many electrical outlets. Of course, it would be different if the person were an employee of the cafe or shop.

The seating areas in shopping malls (Forum des Halles for example) all have charging sockets. And of course the train stations are full of them, including the ones with bicycle pedals where you can become fit again while charging your device with your own leg power. I think it should be obligatory.

I've charged my phone in cafes where I was near a plug whilst seated. I didn't even think twice, nor did anyone say anything. Just remember to bring your plug adaptaor, if necessary.

In the winter I like to find a cafe with gas heaters, unplug the gas line, plug it into my travel generator and use that
