A recepisse of a carte de sejour is most likely not enough to travel. It is for all purposes a temporary authorisation to reside in France while your application for a carte de sejour is being examined. Service-public.fr indicates that holders of a first time recepisse of a carte de sejour need to apply for a visa to be able to renter the Schengen area once they have left it.

I travel within France with only a Titre de Séjour but otherwise I would definitely have a passport. A récépissé is only an extension for an titre de séjour, not really something that can be used on its own.
