Speeding ticket advice
A month after returning from an otherwise glorious trip to France I get a three-page letter saying that I was driving at 58km/h in a 50km/h zone. Then it says something about speed being 53km/h (la vitesse retenue est de: 53km/h).
Reading on, I think they are demanding a 90 Euro fine. Has anyone encountered this? What is my recourse. What if I don't pay (I think I know the answer)? |

Since we go to France often, I swallowed hard and paid (after going to the Consulate in New York where they basically said "tant pis."). At least they have a mechanism to easily pay by credit card!

Above 100, they subtract 5%. |

According to this site, they subtract 5% from measured speeds below 100 km/h. Therefore your fine was for driving 53 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
Above 100, they just subtract 5 km/h. - subtract 5km/h below 100 - subtract 5% above 100 |

Actually, it says the reverse ;):
- subtract 5km/h below 100 - subtract 5% above 100 |
Nonetheless, 90 Euros for going 3km over the limit is a bit excessive. Many of the previous replies mentioned a 45 Euro fine.
