New Year's Eve in Paris

We are headed to Paris over New Year's and will be dining out NYE. We're trying to pack light and therefore want to know whether, in general, Paris is a formal town for New Year's? We'll just be doing dinner, no parties after but don't want to show up in jeans if everyone else is in black tie or vice versa. Thanks!

It will very much depend on the restaurant that you have booked. I'd check with them.

i have done a number of "Bonne année" dinners in 1&2* equivalents around the in small towns in france. i cannot ever recall a time that the french showed up in a decent restaurant in jeans, let alone at a major holiday, and dining holiday like bonne annee. it is the only holiday i recall for which the restaurants have any decoration. all have a special menu(usually with game)

Thanks. I don't really do "semi dressed up" so it's either jeans (nice ones, which work well with a sport coat and dress shirt) or suits in my closets. In fact the only non-jean stand-alone pants I have are for golf...
