Roads around Chamonix

I will be travelling to Chamonix this week -

Thinking of where to stay - I will have to be in Chamonix at night a couple of times - would the roads in the area (if I am staying at St Gervais, for example) be windy, steep - unpleasant at night ?

Thanks

D.

If youre talking about St. Gervais-les-Bains, I guess it depends on what you define as dangerous. It is a somewhat windy road. It is somewhat steep and about a 20-25 minute drive from Chamonix from my recollection. We drove to Les Contamines, which is past St Gervais, on a very rainy day (not at night so I don't know how dark the road might be) and I didn't feel that it was dangerous. The roads in the Alps are very well cared for. Unless you have some special reason for staying at St. Gervais , I think I'd stay in Chamonix.
