Day/overnight trips from Paris - suggestions please.

Hello,

I am looking for recommendations for day trips or overnights from Paris. Train travel or organised coach; like small towns, architecture, restaurants, walks. Have considered Reims, Normandy beaches.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Bruges, Belgium, would be my first choice for either a day trip or an overnighter..........Delightful small town with great architecture.

I was working along similiar lines in asking about a one-of-a-kind sight near Paris in this thread.

Another idea I had was Chartres or Giverny.

We went back to Chartres last year on a two night trip but one would work fine too. An hour or less by train from Paris, plenty to do for a couple of part days, good shooping, and acceptible places to eat.

And the cathedral is every bit as great as advertised. We took the tour with the Englishman who wrote many of the books sold at the cathedral (see Rick Steves for details and contact info). It's a worthwhile expenditure.

Now that is a great thought. When I am in Basel I occasionally take the trip to this place in Colmar

I jokingly say it is the best restaurant in Basel.

For a closer, less expensive option (it's available on a suburban rail line), try Provins.

A great suggestion-we spent a weekend there last year. It's a World Heritage site with a walled city, several interesting places to visit (including a a large rose garden of several acres), and has good if not exceptional food.

Avignon?

Avignon is an easy trip from Paris, and the center of town is quite the happening place during festivals. The old Pope's Palace is interesting, and if you leave the main streets you find yourself quickly in a non-touristy environment. You could also do a tour of roman ruins and old forts out of Avignon if you desired.

Avignon is indeed a cool place, but at 3 hours one way from Paris, maybe a long way to go for an overnight stay.
