I'll just post a whine over here how I wish I could donate blood. Being born in the wrong country (in continental Europe, + a few extra years there) disqualifies me completely. Forever. and ever. Eh.

But in your case, it is truly the thought that counts ^

Seems like you don't get to donate any more with double red, since you can only donate half as often.

At least some blood banks report your blood cholesterol level.

Do any report HDL as well as total cholesterol, since total cholesterol is not that useful by itself?

Mine does (for both the good and the bad). I log in a few days after my donation to see my results

I'm getting queasy reading the stats people list above.

I'm phobic of needles, so yes while I know I'll save a life I don't donate.

You know how they prick your finger? I ask to be put under first; that's how bad I am! Seriously, very low pain threshold, can't look at a needle w/o feeling faint, and barely can handle them taking a vial for tests, much less a pint or whatever it is. And I have what are affectionately referred to as 'invisible veins'.

I don't even know my bloodtype. I figure if I'm ever in a situation where they need blood for me, they'll type me pretty fast. The few times I've had to have blood tests I just hope they have a good 'sticker'.

I've been in some situations where the sticker sucked & the pain was excruciating. I even volunteered one time to participate in a study, but I had to withdraw (they had back-up people) because they 'blew out' my vein every time they took blood. Trust me, that's no fun.

So I salute you all, but I won't be joining your ranks.

PS - I always look away in movies & tv whenever there's a needle involved.

Cheers.

I used to be phobic of needles. Then I got an illness where I had to have a lot of blood tests. Got over it pretty fast. Now I can watch and critique their technique on regular blood draws.

Donating, I still have to look away. That's one honking big needle.

Hopefully, I'll be able to donate again next Spring; I keep travelling to places where I get a 1 year deferral due to malaria risk.

Hmmm, is that why they try to position the collection bag where it is hard to see it fill up? (I actually want to be able to see it so that I can tell how far it is from being filled up.)

No idea; some people are bothered by seeing the blood, and not just the needle, so it makes sense - I generally find the initial flush of blood through the tube pretty cool.

At my local center they keep the bags on a rocker device - I can't remember from my two red cross donations whether they did that.

So do I.

They key to giving blood successfully is not going to a blood drive, but going to your local hospital. This is where you'll learn to trust the (same) person doing the, as you say, sticking.

Winter Storm Causes Blood Supply Shortages in Many States

This week’s winter storm has forced the cancellation of hundreds of American Red Cross blood drives along the eastern seaboard, causing a shortfall of more than 8,000 blood donations in the southeast and northeast corners of the country.

Red Cross Blood Regions in the southeast reported that more than 6,000 blood donations could not be collected due to the storm which paralyzed the South. In the northeast, Red Cross Blood Regions reported that nearly 2,000 blood donations were not collected Wednesday as the snow was still falling.
