2013: Dahl Scholarship - Win Ride on T-6 Racer, a 787 sim, a F16 sim or fishing trip

New Prize: Fishing Trip (3 day 2 night fishing trip Rainy Lake, Ontario Canada. ! See details and photos below!

F-16 sim ride.. See this post below.

Second place prize! See below!

FlyerTalk is again teaming up with a Reno Air Racer Radial Velocity to help support the Jason Dahl Scholarship Fund. Radial Velocity races in the T-6 class at the Reno Air Races and will be providing a ride to the winner of the raffle. The Reno Air Races take place Sept 11 - 15.

FlyerTalk’s goal is to beat last year’s total of $19,236 which more than doubled our 2011 total of $8,566. This year shcooper1 has committed to match the first $1,000 contributed.

Make your raffle donations through the Dahl Fund's website. The deadline for raffle donations will be 4pm MDT September 7. If you are viewing this post on the FlyerTalk App, touch the post to activate all of the embedded links.

The more you give, the greater your chance of winning.

  • $25 = 2 chances
  • $50 = 5 chances
  • $100 = 15 chances
  • $200 = 40 chances
  • $300 = 60 chances
  • $400 = 80 chances
  • $500 = 100 chances

To purchase chances visit the Dahl Fund website and click on the “Donate Now” button in the upper left corner. Donations will be made through PayPal. To be sure you get your chances and FlyerTalk gets credit, use the link “Add special instructions to recipient” and in the special instructions box write “FlyerTalk – [and include FT handle or name].” Please give, even if you know you can't take the ride; just make a note “FlyerTalk – no ride.” Any amount of money is appreciated. Contributions go straight to the fund. Captain Denny will keep track of those given by FlyerTalkers and report back to this thread regularly.

The drawing will be held the evening of September 7th and the winner will be notified by email. This is truly a unique opportunity. Not only is this high-performance aircraft a part of history, but it is one of the few two-seat racing aircraft that can give rides. The ride will take place at a mutually agreed date in St. Louis at Creve Coeur Field (five miles from St. Louis Lambert Airport). The specific date and time of the ride will be coordinated between the winner and John Lohmar. The winner will provide their own transportation and lodging (if needed).

A second place prize has been added to this raffle. The winner and two guests will get to fly the 787 simulator in Houston at a future date. The winner and guests will provide their own transportation and lodging (if needed).

A F-16 simulator ride was just donated. Being a government product it cannot be raffled for cash. Therefore it will be given away. Everyone* who participates in the T-6/787 sim drawing will get one chance for the F-16 sim ride. That is if you buy $25 or $500 worth of T-6/787 sim tickets you will only get 0NE chance to the F-16 sim.

*Details are being researched if the F-16 simulator is open to non US citizens. As with the other prizes you are responsible for your own transportation and hotels.
NEW: We have just received a fourth prize for the T-6 raffle. It will be a three day two night fishing trip from a secluded island in Rainy Lake, Ontario Canada. It is a remote wilderness experience. Solar powered, gas lamps, wood burning hot tub and a cozy out house. You will fly into International Falls Mn. and be met by United pilot Scott Lysford. Everything you see in the photos was built with his own two hands.

World class fishing experience includes walleye, northern pike and small mouth bass. An added bonus is you get to eat what you catch. Additional activities includes a 500' zip line on the island, kayaking and the hot tub. You are in the center of nature and it is not uncommon to witness an Eagle catching his lunch. Everything is provided all you will need is a passport and a sense of adventure that I know you all have. The winner will be connected with F/O Lysford who is a retired Air Force pilot who flew F-16's. The trip will take place in the spring or early summer of 2014 after the ice melts on the lake.

Last year's winners pshuang and Travel & Leisure memorialized their ride in this YouTube video.

Captain Jason Dahl was the Captain of United 93 on 9/11, and lost his life that day along with his passengers and crew. A scholarship fund was set up by friends, family, and fellow pilots in his memory to give qualified students the opportunity to attend flight training schools. It’s hard to believe that almost 12 years have passed since then. We lost his wife, Sandy Dahl, last year, but his fellow pilots are carrying on the charity effort. The Dahl Fund is a 501(c)(3) organization. Last year the Dahl Fund raised $62,000 and awarded $25,000 in scholarships to 17 students. Jason's Alma Mater, San Jose State received $5,000, Metro State in Denver where Jason lived received $5,000 and 15 other students each received $1,000. The Fund's administrative expenses are 1.9% and all board members volunteer their time. Capt. Dave Dosch continues to spend his own money for the scholarship fund costs.

Radial Velocity, a T-6 advanced trainer, was used to train fighter and bomber pilots in World War II. The aircraft has been rebuilt. Owner and pilot, John Lohmar, now races it in the Reno Air Races. This high performance two-person aircraft placed third overall in the 2010 T-6 class race. If you go to the Reno Air Show, buy a pit pass and visit the Radial Velocity team. They'd like to see you. Please also support the team by "liking" them on Facebook.

To help spread the word about this raffle throughout FlyerTalk we would appreciate it if you included a link to this thread in your signature line. Thanks!

I started the ball rolling with a donation. Let's see if we can reach the $1000 match in the first day!

Great Start

We had a great start and have raised $850 in the first three days. Another $150 and we jump right to $2000 because of shcooper1's $1000 match. If anyone else would like to do a match just make a post or call me 330-472-3146.

Whiskarina, Your donation put us over the $1000 match. In the first week we raised $2050. Thank you all for your support.

Kipper,

It would not be fare to change the prize ranking 10 days into the raffle.
Yesterday Capt Steve White rode my jump seat, LAS-IAD. He is from the Continental side of United and was quite impressed with the Capt Jason Dahl Scholarship. Being the simulator evaluator for the 787 he volunteered his services and just today we received permission to offer the 787 sim ride. If we had both prizes from the beginning I would offer the first name picked to choose between the two prizes. Next year that will be the plan.
The best way to have a chance for the 787 sim is to have your name in the drawing at least twice.

This is terrific news!

I can tell you my ride in the Stinson Trimotor was fantastic - but the opportunity to empower deserving young men and women who wish to become part of the next generation of pilots is a thrill and important.

It is becoming ever more expensive to join the ranks of commercial pilots - and the FAA just raised the ante on the minimum number of hours one must have to join the ATP ranks.

Regulations now require airline flight crewmembers, including first officers, to hold an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate; airlines raised their minimum flight time requirements to 1500 hours.

As I think about the upcoming anniversary of the tragic day of 11 Sep 2001, and of those we lost on the ground and in the air, it energizes me to know how many of us care and are contributing to this cause in memory of Capt. Dahl. And a big hats off to Capt. Denny for honchoing this - not to mention Capt. Steve for coming up with the simulator time.

"Do ya think you can fly? Well, do ya, punk?"
