2011 Capt. Jason Dahl Scholarship fund - contribute, you may win a T-6 "Texan" ride!

Experience the thrill of flying a high performance aircraft. FlyerTalk is teaming up with a Reno Air Racer Radial Velocity to help support the Jason Dahl Scholarship fund. Radial Velocity races in the T-6 class at the Reno Air Races and will be providing a ride to the winner of a raffle supporting the scholarship fund if we raise $5,000 for it.

Radial Velocity, a T-6 advanced trainer, was used to train fighter and bomber pilots in World War II. The aircraft has been rebuilt. Owner and pilot, John Lohmar, now races it in the Reno Air Races. This high performance two-person aircraft placed third overall in last year's T-6 class race. We have a separate push to get the FlyerTalk logo on the plane in time for the races in Sept.

Here is a video of the plane at the 2010 Reno Air Races.

This is truly a unique opportunity. Not only is this high-performance aircraft a part of history, but it is one of the few two-seat racing aircraft that can give rides. You will ride it at a mutually agreed upon time before the end of November in St. Louis. In addition, the raffle is supporting a wonderful cause, the Captain Jason Dahl Scholarship fund.

Captain Jason Dahl was the Captain of United 93 on 9/11, and lost his life that day along with his passengers and crew. A scholarship fund was set up by friends, family, and fellow pilots in his memory to give qualified students the opportunity to attend flight training schools. It’s hard to believe that 10 years have passed since then.

We have set a goal of $5K for FlyerTalk to raise this year. The MegaDo participants alone raised $2K in 2009 and $3K in 2010. If we can get 200 people to each give $25, we can reach that goal.

FlyerTalk's goal is to raise in excess of $5K. If we do, a name will be randomly drawn and the person will receive a ride in Radial Velocity’s T-6 plane.

The ride will be given at Creve Coeur Field (five miles from St. Louis Lambert Airport). The winner should plan to take it by the end of November 2011. The airplane generally goes through an eight-month maintenance phase each year. Delaying it past November would likely result in a one-year delay.

Specific times and dates of the ride are to be coordinated between the winner and John Lohmar. The winner will provide their own transportation and lodging (if needed) to St. Louis.

Raffle donations will be made through the scholarship fund's website. You MUST MARK your donation as from a FlyerTalk member.

The deadline for raffle donations will be midnight September 10.

The more you give, the greater your chance of winning.
◦ $25 = 1 chance
◦ $50 = 4 chances
◦ $100 = 10 chances
◦ $200 = 40 chances
◦ $300 = 60 chances
◦ $400 = 80 chances
◦ $500 = 100 chances

It’s a bit tricky to be sure that FlyerTalk gets credit. You have to go all the way thru to the Paypal page. There you will find a link that says “Add special instructions to recipient”. Click it and write “FlyerTalk – handle.” Captain Denny will be tracking donations and reporting back.

Contributions go straight to the fund. Captain Denny will keep track of those given by FlyerTalkers. The winning name will be drawn at the Scholarship dinner in Denver on Sept 11.

Please give even if you know you can't take the ride. It's a worthy cause. Make a special note "FlyerTalk - no ride'.

The Captain Dahl Scholarship Fund was chosen as a FlyerTalk Cares charity a couple years back. Here are some threads on past support:

FlyerTalkers via the Star MegaDo 1 gave $2K in 2009: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/12908738-post2725.html

FlyerTalkers via the Star MegaDo 2 gave $3K in 2010

Captain Denny, FlyerTalk’s favorite UA captain, and msy-msp are on the board of the fund.

If we win, can we donate the flight to someone else?

Don't forget this part:

"It’s a bit tricky to be sure that FlyerTalk gets credit. You have to go all the way thru to the Paypal page. There you will find a link that says “Add special instructions to recipient”. Click it and write “FlyerTalk – handle.” Captain Denny will be tracking donations and reporting back."

BTW - knowing that FTers are competitive, I think it would be cool if we beat the $5K goal!

Cheers.

Someone remind me about the likes and I'll do that this evening... It just always seems to slip my mind, even with the announcement at the top of the forums.

I wish, but no. I like instant gratification. Instead, either Captain Denny is going to register for FlyerTalk and update us regularly, or he will give the numbers to Captain Dan or me to post.

Capt Denny

After many years of being asked I finally signed up and joined the forum. Many of you do not know that I am on the board of directors of the Capt Jason Dahl Scholarship.

I always had a void in my life after that tragic day ten years ago. Being retired Navy I understand the loss of comrades but I could not comprehend what we all witnessed that day.

I joined a few of my fellow pilots and Jason's friends to keep his memory alive by starting a scholarship in his name. We raise funds to give finiancial assistance to young men and women seeking an aviation career and your help with this life long project will be greatly appreciated.

I am open for questions you may have about Capt Dahl's scholarship.
