On the bright side, my other half much prefers seats that are straight rather than angled (for some reason) so she’s happy.

If I should add something, the A330 cabin is quite cramped for a widebody. The tappering of the walls is quite pronounced, and overhead space is limited due to it. Even a 767 feels more roomy in the window seats.

I flew HND-HEL in the new C (upgraded from PE for 30k - totally worth it) It also meant I cannot compare JL and AY PE. The JL PE was very pleasant and the plane was empty - 40 pax in total (C+PE+Y)! AY seemed to be chock full coming back.
I was very pleasantly surprised in AY C. I know that people either love or hate the new seat. I wouldn't say I "loved" it, but had absolutely no issues with it. I can see why the airline would like it (no moving parts or motors, subsequently less weight, less maintenance, etc). From the pax point of view, these are better than the "old" one, because - 1/ (much) more storage and table space 2/ more privacy. In the middle seat there's a full partition (that can be lowered, if travelling together) and the seat shell is very cocoon like, so all I could see of the pax on the other side of the aisle was 20 cm from the knee down. As a bed it functioned well, the footwear is good.
Food was good and service friendly, so all in all a very good trio.
Flew the northern route (considerably more to the north than JL did on the outbound*) and even got a certificate (it said 88°N)
*JL flew Helsinki-Tromssa-Northern Greenland-Western Alaska-Japan, whereas AY flew Japan-Bering straight-North Pole-Nordkap(?)-Oulu-Helsinki

14JAN memoryfoam pillow ARN-DOH
16JAN no memory foam pillow DOH-CPH
23JAN no memory foam pillow HEL-DXB
This is annoying. I consider the pillow an integral part of the seat. I did get a third small pillow, an extra firm one (there are differences!) and it's okay, but...

It was interesting stepping off the new config straight onto the old one. The additional privacy and better storage of the new one becomes very evident. You also realise that the fabric surround of the new seat is really good at deadening sound. The old seat has so much hard plastic in comparison.
