Can't change date for LAX-HEL-HKG for entire of Jan/Feb (PRO availability only??)

Facing a somewhat bizarre situation. Flown the outbound segment of an open jaw economy ticket SIN-HEL-JFK//LAX-HEL-HKG. Return segment is booked for end Feb but a personal situation requires me to return to SIN much earlier (have a separate ticket from HKG-SIN on CX) and I called AY to check on the availability in Jan.

Crazily, I was told that changing the date to any other date in Jan and even Feb for this specific routing LAX-HEL-HKG would require a topup of ~1200 EUR per adult (you can purchase 2 return tickets from LAX to HKG on other OW carriers at this price!). Thought the agent must have made a mistake and was going to HUACA but while checking the rough availability myself I was shocked to find that all dates in entire of Jan and Feb had only PRO fare availability for this specific routing. Checking the individual segments LAX-HEL and HEL-HKG with return in either direction however showed plenty of availability for basic and light fares on most dates starting from mid Jan. Random searches for LAX-HEL-SIN (just wanted to have a comparison) didn't have the same issue as well and there was decent basic fare availability.

This just seems like someone in AY arbitrarily deciding to block basic and value availability for no good reason... with the protests still ongoing in HKG one would have thought otherwise...

Both legs for my ticket were booked in basic and date changes were supposed to be allowed for a nominal change fee. I just find it ridiculous that I can't make a simple date change for an entire month in Jan which is supposed to be low season. Anyone has any suggestions on how to approach this issue?

wow, bdsm in back! Have you been trolling elsewhere in meanwhile? Since you don't fly Finnair anymore, you propably haven't been to Platinum Wing to see if it exists.

Flexible (economy/biz/first) tickets are expensive on most carriers. If flexibility is needed, it is not clever to buy AY campaign/basic/light ticket types, nobrainer, not?

It would perhaps help in speculations to know the exact ticket types purchased for the trip above.

The ticket type I bought was basic for both legs for this particular trip. Both basic and value allowed date changes and even cancellations just that the fees were slightly higher for basic.

I do try to pay more to be on value ticket type (although even value wouldn't have helped in this case because there is zero availability for both basic and value for 2 months) but for routings that don't originate from Europe, the jump from basic to value can be just outright silly sometimes. The price of my basic ticket booked 6 months in advance was already ~ 1300 EUR (2000 SGD) and AY was asking for 2000 EUR (3000 SGD) for value and 2600 EUR (4000 SGD) for pro. It would have made more sense for me to book a J award ticket outright with other OW carriers like CX/JAL vs paying 2000 EUR for an economy ticket with AY and save myself the frustration of monitoring if the upgrade vouchers cleared (out of the 2 outbound segments I flew, only HEL-JFK got upgraded last min and my remaining 2 inbound segments are still on waitlist...)

Now I can understand if there is no basic/value availability if it's peak season and flights are very full but this does not appear to be the case at all. I have the flexibility of moving the flight to any date in Jan but there is simply no availability on any date in Jan and even Feb (did not check beyond that).

I can see availaility (US POS) LAX-HEL-HKG
14, 16, 19, 21, 21, 23 and 26 Jan (down to Z bucket), some days only one but more commonly 4+ seats.
Not available: 5, 7, 9 28 Jan
LAX-HEL-HKG is only possible Tue, Thu and Sun.
What is the exact fare you have?

What is the exact fare you have?
Yes the routing I have LAX-HEL-HKG is only on Tue, Thu, and Sun.

My fare class is O. Not sure if fare basis is important but fare basis is OBA2SG (outbound) and OLXECOUS (inbound).

I just had a look at expertflyer as well and I do see O9 availability on most of the dates you mentioned with availability. Is the change fee supposed to be more reasonable when the same fare class O is available?

However, when I construct the same itinerary with LAX-HEL-HKG as the return leg on AY website, I can only see Pro ticket type for all Tue, Thu, and Sun in Jan. If Z and O class is available, shouldn’t there be some basic and value availability? From the fare class tutorial thread, I see that Pro should only be Y, B, M so something is not making sense.

If you look plain LAX-HEL-HKG one way, you will be offered the flexible Y/B/H fares, but if you look return LAX-HEL-HKG//SIN-HEL-LAX you find the Basic bares available (Starting 1178USD return)

I'm not an expert, but you may be stuck with the 14 days advanced reservation rule on this (OLXECOUS) fare, only way forward is to pay the 200UDS service fee, upgrade the fare for less restrictive (maybe Y/B/H) fare and pay the difference.

I'm not an expert, but you may be stuck with the 14 days advanced reservation rule on this (OLXECOUS) fare, only way forward is to pay the 200UDS service fee, upgrade the fare for less restrictive (maybe Y/B/H) fare and pay the difference.
Thanks for the tips so far.

Not sure why a simple date change is so complicated with AY. My experience with other carriers is a lot more straightforward. Usually after first segment is flown, there will be no repricing and you will be able to change the date (if changes are allowed) by paying the reissue fee as long as same fare class is available.
