Helsinki-Busan Summer 2020
Nothing from AY yet (as far as I can see) but at a joint Finnish/South Korean government press conference, it's been announced that AY will start 3x weekly HEL-PUS in summer 2020

I feel AY would've probably preferred an additional ICN frequency but it'll be interesting to see how this goes.

I think there was a thread here a while ago that said the Korean government was reluctant to have long-haul traffic out of any airport other than ICN. Wonder if Moon's hometown connections have changed that...

President Moon is currently in Finland for a state visit so the announcement is appropriate. Busan is a great city to visit.
[Sorry, the state visit was already mentioned in the link].
What next? A couple of years ago Finland agreed with Russia that Finland would have rights to fly to Nanjing, Sapporo and Busan. All these destinations wil be operated by next summer.

Is it really so that Russia gives overflight rights to specific destinations? I would have thought that it's "xx flights a day over Siberia" type of agreement.
HEL-PUS is great news, hopefully the pricing will be (even) better than ICN. Japan pricing can be prohibitive due to the cartel, so ICN has been my go to destination when going to Japan. Also great for China's TWOV schedule, arriving from Korea, leaving for Finland (or the other way around) ticks all the boxes. And can be attractively priced.

Yes, the overflight rights specify which destinations may be served (in addition to limiting the total number of flights).

It's going to be interesting to see what the pricing for J will be ex-EU/RU, taken there's no competition to PUS from Europe. Also looking forward to see how PUS will be integrated to the routing tables and will it permit any routings to Japan/China/HK SAR. As from a business perspective, I give a thumbs up, because this is good diversification from the China heavy expansion, as long as people elsewhere than Finland find it by word of mouth or by using e.g. Expedia and Momondo. PUS isn't exactly a small city at ~3.5 million, so there's potential, if AY stays the single direct option for a while. I'd assume KE and others will try to compete with fares.
