In my experience booking HEL-JFK-xxx is super risky. Unless you have 4hr+ transit.

at JFK main problem is the queue for immigration, otherwise pretty fast. running every single time at JFK and not enjoying it.

Last week, after AY5, the immigration was quick despite of fairly long queues. Also the security was quick. I used Flagship check-in but did not save a lot of time in doing that because the queues to the security were short. Maybe the replacement staff that they have due to the government shutdown is more efficient that the usual crew? The total time from stepping out of AY5 to Flagship Lounge was less than 30 min.

Maybe little off-topic, but when using the Flagship Check-in at JFK for transfer, they did not escort me all the way to the front of the queue before the security screening. I was only escorted up to document check (non-TSA/Pre section, as I don't have TSA/Pre). The queues between document check and security screen were short (5 people in front of me) so it definitely did not matter this time. But always before they escorted all the way to the security sceen. Did they change the service?

If you are speaking of US immigration staff they are the same people but by law have to work even without pay. Yes they are not getting paid for their work until the US government restarts at which time they will get their back pay.

According to the local news in New York last week, TSA had to call in a lot of back-up / replacement staff because of the high number of regular TSA staff reporting sick or staying away from the work for other reasons.

Flying in to JFK from HEL today and back out to HEL tomorrow. No way I could have avoided it unfortunately. I will report back. Wish me luck!

Now my JFK-DCA connection in Oct has been squeezed to 1h 20min, MCT seems to be 1h 15min. Of course there are later JFK-DCA flights too but let see if AA manages to do further schedule changes so I might cancel and book something else.

With such a short connection you will be shepherded through immigration and security bypassing all lines.

I took another look at the on-time record of AY5 in the past two weeks and it's just as bleak as it was before. Check it out: https://i.imgur.com/VPh4Q4B.jpg

These delays go beyond whatever the effect of winter weather or the shutdown, even though I bet AY will try to blame these delays on either when people apply for EU261. I don't see how a schedule change or a 10-15 minute addition to the scheduled flight time is enough to fix these chronic delays. There's some sort of a systemic operational issue going on and it's astonishing to me that they're unable to fix it week after week.

There is no EU261 compensation for delays up to 3 hours.

there is if a small delay causes you to miss your connection and ending up being 3 hours or more late on your final destination.
