On the other hand, Finavia is pitching LAX as the "27th international intercontinental route" from HEL, conveniently forgetting that the route is only being resurrected.

I wonder what are the other (national) intercontinental routes. Did the Republic of Finland hide a colonial empire somewhere?

LOL!

Well, not the republic of Finland per se, but there was one colony in Finnish history between 1784 and 1809. Sadly, airports weren't really operational at that time, but HEL-SBH would have made a nice domestic intercontinental route!

There may be a celebration - they are numbering this AY1. That's a flagship route!

Hmm... I really wouldn’t count on it being a flagship route – I find it difficult to see a NA route as a flagship route for AY.

However, I think there’s going to be something special. It’s not like they just discontinued the route. Was it in the mid-90s that happened?

You may want to check AY.com for FCO schedules. They're actually suggesting routings like FCO-JFK-HEL (duration 22:10)

This definitely brings back nice memories of AY141 HEL-SEA-LAX on a DC-10 in the early 1980s.

My first ever Y-to-J upgrade to row 5, returning from LAX in 1982, was somewhat shadowed when hearing the laughter and popping champagne bottles behind the curtain in AY's F.
