Yes, that would indeed be strange to claim to offer them for free and then move them behind the paywall of internet access. However, there is a wifi portal which is accessible without log in, so they could have been placed there. But then again, they would be free for everyone.
Digital newspapers will be available on all 359 flights during a trial period this summer.
Major Finnish Newspapers eq. HS, Kauppalehti, IS etc. are loaded on Nordic Sky Portal and no internet access required, only a personal device.
EDIT: Free for all passengers.

OK, then that is pretty similar to the SK concept, only that you can't access the stuff before boarding. And it is only a half of the longhaul fleet.

Usually when I ask for champagne they tell me they don't have any, until I tell them I'm platinum, then they always reply "Oh, we are so sorry, of course you can have champagne".

It always cracks me up when airline employees don't want to serve you and then instantly change their attitude when they see your status.

had a similar experience on AA earlier this year in J. I requested some champagne 1h before landing. They didn't have any anymore, I said: "no problem". I could live with that because probably they would need to open a bottle for one glass and throw the rest away.

Then after 5 min they did bring me some champagne and said "sorry for letting you wait so long Mr. Casper79".

This. My companion asked for a Bloody Mary, they replied with "Honey, not in economy class". I asked for champagne and they said "It's 12 euros". I whispered that I'm plat and instantly she said "Oh my god I'm so sorry! One Bloody mary coming up! Is there anything else you'd like to have? A business class wine to go with the meal?"

Isn't that sorta the point? Or one of them anyway.

GDN-HEL yesterday: Drinks offered but no champagne. Not sure if this is the norm on the longer ATR-72 flights?

Too often they only stock 1 or 2 bottles and they're already gone on the outbound...

I believe they should know when approaching you what you are eligible for (as long as you have your OWE status registered), just to avoid these quick changes in behaviour.
I forgot to ask during my flight, but I saw on their new electronics that some seats are gold coloured, so I was wondering could that be a sign of "OWE nearby" for the crew during service. If so, it seems like a nice tool for the crew.

Yes, there's a seat map there with all the elites shown, so this surprise platinumhood should be avoided in the future.

Excellent service on HEL-RVN A few days back- all economy flight but champagne provided upon request without any issue for my wife and I (both BA OWE). I did check before ordering if drinks were complimentary and the immediate response was "yes, free for emerald cards". Our boarding cards both had our BA numbers on and we weren't asked for any further proof of eligibility, so I presume status had registered on the crew system too

This is kinda opposite to my experience on LHR-HEL last week. As it was a BA codeshare I had BA OWE in the system. According to the FA "policy has changed" and only AY Platinum gets free drink (and newspaper). After showing my AY Plat card got both the drink and newspaper.
