I made my AY+ Silver by flying HEL-ARN in Y (500 tier points), ARN-HEL-BKK-HEL-ARN in C (2000+15000+15000+2000 tier points) and then again ARN-HEL in Y (500 tier points), plus five intra-Europe flights in Y (1000 tier points each). HEL-ARN-HEL-BKK-HEL-ARN-HEL was around 1600 euros. I don't know if this was the cheapest way to get Silver but not too expensive either. At least, it was fun and comfortable.

In case you do get a segment on FlyBe flights, theyŽre often cheaper than OUL or ARN to MHQ as in Mariehamn. The FlyBe-site didnt allow to book a return less than 90 minutes after landing. So, youŽd need to spend the day there. But itŽs cheap.

Those fares are widely available, typically via AMS, MXP or FCO but with little tweaking with dates also LHR can be found for maximum points.
eg. 8.4 dep, 23.4 return HEL-AMS-HKG-SIN-HKG-CDG-HEL for 511e
10.1 dep, 11.1 return HEL-CDG-HKG-SIN-HKG-CDG-HEL for 535e (less than 10 hours in singapore)
I thought this is quite normal knowledge, since many shoe-string-travellers use these cheap rates. Also DPS, HKT, BKK, et al with <700e rates.
Fare basis L/M/K/HL1YFI. Last one is especially lucrative since changes are only 25e at any point.

H fare is little rarer, as is also LHR-connections. I don't just know any good method for mass-searching fare classes. Ita matrix doesn't doesnt seem to work or my matrix-fu is too low level. Maybe I should grind couple extra levels...

Nice thread! I got a trip on its way I'm wondering how to make most of those mile. Here's the situation..
I'm already at 110k AY since end of Sept when my tracking period starts. Believe I will renew AY Plat anyways but got pretty juicy bucket of miles on its way from one trip and wondering where to credit them:
AA Y HEL - LHR
AA Y LHR - LAX
AA Y LAX - KOA
AA Y KOA - LAX
AA Y LAX - JFK
AY Y JFK - HEL (upgraded with voucher)
Now if I add this up (might be totally off and this is where seeking your advise).. If I credit the miles to AY I get approx 37k points as AY Plat. Basically with poinst I have already I would re-qualify for AY Plat. If I credit them to AA, I get approx 18miles for AA. Pretty close to apply for the exec plat challenge and I can fill in the remaining segments pretty easily to reach 25k.
Anyways.. What would you do?
Happy New Year and safe travels!

Fare basis can be found for example at ebookers.fi at payment page (not exactly the same thing but there is correlation between them). There are also some nice c fares ex cph to Mia, jfk etc but i have no idea about min. stay.
