Background
From time to time, AY will make the Y traveller an offer to upgrade. This thread lists when, how and and how much the upgrade is.

Selection process is unknown, but it is likely that neither fare class on original ticket nor tier status of traveller is a selection criteria, at least not to travellers advantage. From the reports made so far, both travellers with and without FF# in the reservation have gotten offers.

Offers are likely made only when Y is oversold or nearly full. Some travellers have reported declining offer and being upgraded for free later ("op-up").

Offers are fixed price offers, either in € or in AY+points. The latter kind is only valid for members of AY+, while €-offers are directed to all kind of travellers.

Offers are made either in mail or via text message and recipient has 72 hours to repspond. Some reports says this time is now shortened to 48 hours. Text message offers typically arrive close to departure and may not state a last time to reply.

Offers in text message can be replied to and upgrade is instantly processed. Offers in mail has occasionally not cleared (said to be "sold out" when accepting offer too late).

If offer is accepted and upgrade clears, new ticket is issued in F, so a confirmed upgrade with all perks of business class included. Mileage earning is according to original fare class however.

Development
In august 2015 AY announced a trial to let travellers bid for upgrades, initially on AY89 and AY90. It is likely that bidding will affect the number of fixed price offers.

The trial has been made permanent, and the bidding for upgrade has been extended to more longhaul routes.
The program has also led to a consolidation of upgrade options to one webpage
https://www.finnair.com/int/gb/upgrade-options
where you can upgrade by bidding, by using AY+ points or by accepting last minute cash offers. The latter ("Last minute" offers) are the same as have been discussed in this thread.. Finnair still pushes those offers via e-mail and text-message, but now also shows them on this webpage.

I would not pay 440€ for an upgrade on a day flight, especially when it won't add any mileage credit. You could just buy Economy comfort (isn't that half price for Gold's?) for a lot less.

It that the the upgrade prices can go from 250€ to 600€ depending on time and destination.

  • City-pair: LHR-HEL (AY1332)
  • Price offered: 200€
  • Flight date: 6-Sep-2018
  • FF tier on reservation: BA Silver (OWS)
  • Original ticket type: Unsure (Where do you find this?)
  • When the offer was made: 4 days before flight
  • How the offer was made: 'Upgrade your travel class' - 'Last minute Offer' on the desktop website
What are the chances of the price coming down before the flight? I want to travel A350 Business Class again but not at ~Ł180

No chance I would say, but when you get an offer, you can usually also pay with AY+ points. The price for the required 10k points is less than 130€. But you need to add your AY+ account to your booking or let CS do the magic.

While on topic, I have waitlisted upgrade pending with points on LHR route and A350 plane obviously, but only 10 days left and I am biting my fingers why the upgrades have not been cleared although there seems to be plenty seats available (and that is also what CS writes me when I keep pushing them by email). Annoying. But I have neither been offered yet a cash upgrade.

Can the agent really make a difference? That would be nice. I also have some pending waitlisted upgrades with a lot of free seats in the cabin that I would like to get cleared.

Yes. A bad agent will just tell you to wait patiently, a good agent will resend the request and it might come back confirmed within a very short period of time.

For a non-tier member these offers would actually make sense considering that you will get lounge access, priority security and extra baggage (should this be needed). As a Platinum member I would not bother but as a basic/silver member the math would be quite different.
