I have been standing-by for flights for years and there is always drama, stress, and trouble. Same day confirmed is almost non-existent anymore.

Flight 1: Cleared as #2 on the list, but the "system was down" so no boarding pass could be printed. They basically told me I was out of luck and not getting on the flight or if I did, certainly I would have to check my bag... until a nice agent overheard me complaining and went and somehow produced the boarding pass.

Flight 2: Cleared as #1 on the list. Went to get my boarding pass. Was stuck in line behind what appeared to be a challenging reservations issue. I asked nicely if I could get my boarding pass. I was ignored. I finally decide to go scan my old boarding pass with group #2... knowing it won't work.. but hoping they will issue me the boarding pass since they were so caught up with the other customer. They tell me, I don't have a seat. I showed them that I cleared on the app and was assigned a seat. They said it was a "system error." They then proceeded to add two people above me on the list... take away my seat, clear them and I was left not making the flight.

The poor IT, the poor attitudes, the lack of flexibility.... it's just exhausting.

I know standby is not a guarantee... but I love how whenever I need something they blame the system and say they have no control.. but when the system finally works to follow policy (overriding gate agent discretion and clearing people based on status)... they tell me to pound sand. An what about the SYSTEM prohibiting adding standbys less than 45 minutes from departure?

Mistakes happen.. but the crappy attitude and blame the customer attitude was... well... AA being AA.

And this was just the story for today... I have countless others.

I've flown through DFW, as well as LHR...recently I booked a return through CLT...any thoughts here from more experienced travelers.

Also, I've flown in business in the past for 55-70K AA miles...this time, LAX-LHR was 100K, and the return was 77K...I can do cheaper redemptions through LHR, but then you have massive taxes.

Is this normal inflation/point devaluation, or am I just not looking?

Thanks!

Anyone know how far along AA has gotten on the A319 reconfiguration (adding 4 F seats to total 12)?

This week, AA's JFK-STT flights in late December went from 8 to 12 F (J, actually, on this route) seats. This allowed me to move our paid tickets from a connection to this nonstop flight for a modest ($12) price reduction. But, only 2 of the 3 seats we need were not in Row 3. I grabbed those assuming that if the aircraft were to be swapped to an 8 seat cabin, being in Row 1 or 2 is better than being in Row 3, but maybe seat selection is not what matters for determining who gets bumped. Two of the 3 pax are Golds and 1 is EXP, all on same PNR. Does seat selection or status matter most if that happens - assuming all aircraft won't be reconfigured by late December.

The hubby and I have booked some great award redemptions in premium cabins over the last 15 years. Many of our best have been thru AA and surprising have been fairly recent (here's looking at you ORD-DFW-AKL in J for 62k pp).

But I recently booked what I feel is our "worst" redemption in ages. We're going to Hawaii in November and today booked ORD-DFW-HNL in J for 142k each. Cash prices were $1959 each. I can't remember the last time I didn't get at least 2 cents per mile (usually way more). We didn't really want to pony up $4k one way...but are to the point we don't want to fly less than business class anymore on flights that long. Coming back we did get the HNL-ORD in J for a lot less thanks to a schedule change so at least I only feel like we over paid for 1 leg.

But my question to the most knowledgeable AA frequent flyers out there is what has been your worst redemption(s) and after the fact did you regret blowing the miles?

Hi all. I had booked an economy Avios award flight through BA which got cancelled, and was able to rebook onto a GVA-LHR-PHL-TYS itinerary (with BA still as the marketing carrier of course). GVA-LHR is operated by British Airways, LHR-PHL is operated by American, and PHL-TYS is operated by Piedmont dba AA. I was hoping to potentially upgrade LHR-PHL to PE or J but I can't seem to find an upgrade option through either carrier. I have an American confirmation number and am able to manage my reservation in the American app, but there is no instant upgrade prompt on the app or website. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

On June 8, AA.com and the AA app repeatedly offered me a First Class award-ticket change from SFO to RIC that would refund 11,500 miles and $5.60. Every attempt to complete the transaction failed and directed me to call AAdvantage. Over the next 3.5 hours multiple departments told me the offer couldn't be booked, even after I reproduced it on AA.com and provided screenshots. Has anyone else experienced AA displaying a specific award-ticket exchange that agents could not or would not honor?

I know airlines get plenty of criticism on here, often deserved, but I thought this NBC 5 DFW story was genuinely heartwarming: https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/am...-bear/4032624/

A 4-year-old boy accidentally left his beloved teddy bear, Bobby, in the Admirals Club at DFW before his family’s flight to the Virgin Islands. American Airlines employees found Bobby, kept him safe, sent the family photos of his “adventures” around the airport, and then had him waiting at the gate when the family returned. They even made Bobby a little passport documenting his week at DFW.

Maybe this hit me harder than it would hit most people because I’m an adult who travels with what I jokingly call my “emotional support stuffed animal.”

So I completely understood why this mattered so much to that family. To a lot of people, Bobby might just look like a beat-up teddy bear. But to Patrick, he’s part of the family. And the fact that AA employees treated him that way, not as a random lost item, but as something loved... is really touching.

It’s a small thing in the grand scheme of airline operations, but small acts of kindness like this are the things people remember. Good on the DFW AA team for handling this with so much care and humanity!

My +1 got back one day late from GRU-DFW (mechanical issues) and then encountered this on her connection DFW-IND (AA1948), seat 20+:

She was asked what she wanted to drink. Response "Coke, please". She got a cup filled with ice and then the FA said "OK, I'm done." and then left. No more service to other pax in rows further back. No snacks either on a 2.5h flight. I guess that's typical for AA.? I don't fly AA on purpose and have one more reason now...

Mods: please move to a designated 'rant about FA' thread if there is one - can hardly imagine.

I'm planning out a status match from Delta (Platinum Medallion) for next year to earn/maintain Platinum Pro with AA. I will need to lean on AA Hotels to juice my loyalty point earning, but I'm trying to gauge just how much to plan for. I have an AA credit card, so I do see elevated rates, but without status, it's hard to tell exactly what they would be during my status match period.

I realize the rates vary by property and date, but I'm curious if, outside of Vegas, is it reasonable to expect 10k-15k from a 2-3 night stay spending $400-$500 for a stay?

A couple weeks ago my flight was delayed due to MX so I would misconnect. I get rebooked automatically onto a different flight that wouldn't work for me, but the app showed a bunch of different options, which I tried to switch to, only for that to fail. Technology can be finnicky, so I go to the FL, and despite showing them the options in the app (and the option to do a confirmed (not standby) same day change onto the preferred itinerary as well), they say that since they rebooked me onto the first available itinerary to my destination, it's now a voluntary change subject to repricing (over $1k).

Now my flight is cancelled due to the weather at DFW and I'm rebooked for the next day. Thankfully the option does work for me (although it's not preferred, but it should get me there albeit later than what I could have been rebooked onto), and nowhere in the app is the option to even look at other options.

I'm used to seeing the "You've been rebooked to fly" banner and having the ability to choose the flight that works best for me (and generally avoids whatever hub is in a tizzy that day) - does this option no longer exist, or is it just a string of bad luck on my part (and awful FL agents that I've seemingly been running into at DFW lately)?
