Upgrade only one partner (Iberia) segment of an AA-sold 4-segment itinerary?

I purchased (money, not miles) through AA.com, a 4-segment itinerary:

I purchased (money, not miles) through AA.com, a 4-segment itinerary:
BCN-MAD (op by Iberia, AA code, coach class) connecting to MAD-PHL (AA op, AA code, premium economy), returning entirely in business class (PHL-MAD AA op AA code, MAD-BCN IB op AA code).
I want to upgrade just the first (IB op, AA code, AA sold) segment (BCN-MAD) to business class, because IB domestic/European flights, unless you're super premium, pretty much always force gate checking normal carry-on baggage. (BCN-MAD is short, and squeezing me and my wife into an IB A321 for that segment would be ok, but the gate-check is something I'd Just Really Rather Avoid).

AA says they can't do anything (except re-price the entire itinerary, now months later, with lower availability, and if that had even been available for sale when I first bought it, I would have bought it that way), and IB says they can't do anything (because AA sold it). [edit] clarification: IB chat/email says that; talking to a nice lady at IB's Madrid call centre just now, she says that it can be done - only via web/app - starting exactly three weeks prior to the scheduled flight date.
Ugh.
Other than in future pay a travel agent to book the the-airlines'-websites-don't-want-to-sell class combinations, is there any *presently* way to pay to upgrade just this first BCN-MAD leg? Or am I stuck with almost certainly gate-checking my carry-on bags from BCN-MAD (unless, three weeks ahead, the IB agent is right, it being AA-sold doesn't block even that, and capacity remains available)? (There's plenty of time between flights, so it'll almost surely work, I just don't like it).
[ I have already put in, on IB's website, an upgrade *bid*, but I'd be okay paying a bit more to confirm it, if there's any way to do it; it's amazing to me that they do have the last-minute bid option but they don't seem to offer a confirmed-in-advance upgrade even at a higher price].

thanks,

I am sure there may be a diversion thread I missed, so please forgive me. My friends are on this flight but seeing as it's trans-Atlantic, they cannot yet respond because they don't have internet. Flighty popped up with the notification, but I can't find the reason. Flighty stats show the usual but not the reason. A I don't have EF or anything fancier than Flighty and FR24, which show the plane got east of the southern part of NB, and turned back as it was in the Atlantic (closer to USA than the UK).

Appreciate the help. Again, forgive me if I sound like a worrywart. I did try all my flight apps and even sent an AI bot to comb the web!

I wanted to see what the consensus was before calling AA as far as my options are concerned. I have flights booked (rt) Phl-MIA-EZE with a system wide upgrade confirmed for one direction of the trip. The certificate expired in March, and was confirmed upon booking. The flights are scheduled during the EZE. Runway project reducing the flights into and out of EZE for 2 weeks. The legs involving EZE have been canceled, and it does not look like will be reinstated. I was not set on going to Buenos Aires. Was looking for a confirmable SWE, on a trip that I would be happy to take as a good use of the certificate. What do you think my options will be to preserve the SWE, and also get greater value than Phl-MIA.
Thank you for your thoughts and advice.

My credit card statement cycle ends the 1st week of June
I will have plenty of LPs this statement cycle to finish the status match completely however they wont post until I am at the beginning of phase 2 which will be 4 months
Does AA backdate spend LPs for the sake of the match or do I have to wait a whole 4 months to go from PP to EP?
I fear I know the answer but curious if AA has ever awarded EP as a courtesy since the match would be 100% complete

Now the best lounge agent ever was able to first rebook me on a PE seat from MAD -> CLT -> DFW and then kept trying and booked me again on MAD -> DFW on Iberia in J (not the best seat in the house (8L) but I get back home tonight without another connection).
Question is does the business class seat in Iberia cost me the SWU or can I expect a refund of the same?

I’m seeing a (targeted?) AAdvantage promo in the AA app for Australia/New Zealand travel.

Key terms as shown:

* Register and book by May 31, 2026
* Travel must be completed by March 31, 2027
* Earn 1 AAdvantage bonus mile per base mile on eligible flights
* Maximum bonus: 25,000 AAdvantage bonus miles
* Eligible flights must be marketed by American Airlines and operated by American or Qantas
* Promo appears limited to nonstop flights between the 48 contiguous United States and Australia/New Zealand
* Award tickets, Basic Economy, and fare classes that do not earn base miles are excluded
* Bonus miles do not count toward status qualification or Million Miler status
* Terms say connecting segments within and/or internationally to/from the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand booked in the same itinerary are not eligible for the bonus

The last point is the interesting one to me. It reads like AA is trying to limit this very specifically to nonstop transpacific segments, and potentially excluding itineraries with domestic positioning or onward connections on the same PNR.

Has anyone else received this? Curious whether this is broadly targeted, route-specific, or tied to recent Australia/NZ search or booking activity.

While booking, I could go into AA.com and assign myself and my travel companions Main Cabin Extra seats. No longer. I had a schedule change and was reassigned "preferred" seats. With a long phone call, I was able to get my MCE seats back, but I was told that's no longer the policy. Has there been any official confirmation of this? And will I have access to the MCE seats at the 24 hour mark?

And can I still get into the Flagship lounges, or has that also changed?

I assume this change may have been made at the same time that the Basic Economy seating rules changed?

Union leadership is publicly advancing three central arguments: American Airlines management lacks a long-term strategy, the status quo is unacceptable, and the union is open to any path forward, including mergers, that would improve the airline.

Edit: I realized EmilioVigil posted this in the other thread. Mods, feel free to merge if you like...or we talk here about how this statement, combined with the no-confidence vote from the FA union might force leadership to respond.

Curious what others would have done in my situation.

Booked AA177 which departs JFK close to 9pm and lands in SFO around midnight local time. Upon boarding, found AA maintenance trying to fix my seat as the seat power wasn't working. After 15 minutes of maintenance working on the issue, they gave up but allowed the seat to be used in the current upright position. This meant that I had to use the seat in that position for the entire flight. The FA was apologetic, pilot apologized in the welcome message, but nothing beyond that. This issue affected myself and the aisle seat in the row (J is 2:2 on the 321T). Aisle seat and I were both solo travelers and the J cabin was completely full.

Question 1 - We noted that there were empty F seats that they could have moved us to, but there was no effort made by the FA to upgrade my seatmate and I and I wasn't sure if that was even an option.

Question 2 - Had to chase AA for some compensation and got a canned AI response. When I pushed back and had a human read the feedback I was offered 15k AA miles, which seems stingy for a cash J ticket.
