Hi everyone,

I'm trying to solve a childhood aviation mystery from August 2012. I was traveling with my uncle's family from New York to Orlando (MCO). While we no longer have the Expedia receipts, I have some very vivid sensory memories that I'm hoping the "historians" here can help verify.

The Logistics:

Origin: My uncle is a UA loyalist and is 100% certain we flew United out of EWR.

The Route: We were staying in Midtown Manhattan (37th/42nd St) and I remember a long drive on elevated highways, passing through Chinatown, before reaching the airport (likely FDR Drive to Holland Tunnel, then Pulaski Skyway).

The Aircraft: I had just arrived from Beijing on an Air China 747-400 (B-2443) days prior. My strongest memory is that the UA plane to Orlando felt significantly older and crummier than the CA's 744.

Configuration: It seemed that the plane was a widebody with two aisles (2-3-2 layout). I sat in a 2-seat section by the window. While, I'm not sure about this

Interior: Very dated. Dark blue seats. No seatback screens (No AVOD/PTV).

Exterior: It seemed no any wingtips or sharklet on the plane

The Mystery: Historical data on some apps suggests a 737-500 for certain UA/CO frequencies on this route, but my memory of the 2-3-2 twin-aisle cabin is unshakable.

My Questions for the Experts:

Did UA/CO frequently run 767-200 (762) "up-gauges" or tag-flights on the EWR-MCO route during the August summer peak in 2012?

Were there specific flight number ranges (e.g., UA 1000+, or seasonal extras) that typically utilized the older 762 fleet for domestic runs back then?

Is it possible I' m misremembering a 737-500 as a widebody, or was the PMCO 762 a common sight on this leisure route during that specific merger era?

I know it’s a long shot without a specific date or flight number, but that 2-3-2 configuration and the "older than a 747" vibe are etched in my brain. Would love to hear from anyone who flew the "Friendly Skies" during the 2012 merger chaos!

Thanks in advance!

Curious about what those saner than I and/or who do TATL more often than I think.

Currently have a ticket booked at 88k miles for BLL-FRA-LHR-EWR-CLE -- all in (nominal) J, with BLL-FRA-LHR operated by LH, LHR-EWR-CLE operated by UA. Leaves BLL at 6:55PM and I spend about 11 hours at LHR arriving home the following afternoon (already have the T2 HGI booked for the night)

A new option, also at 88k miles has appeared BLL-FRA-ZRH-IAD-CLE, leaving at 6:00AM and arriving CLE at 11:44PM the same day). This is in J except for the final segment with BLL-FRA on LH, FRA-ZRH-IAD operated by LX (A330-300)

I've never flown LX long haul but at the moment despite the longer travel time I'm inclined to stick with what I have (since I'm not a morning person and using UA TATL gets me the PQP rebate and, theoretically at least, makes the EWR PL available for me on arrival [not sure the connection is actually long enough after clearing immigration for that to really matter], and an 11:44 CLE arrival realistically means I'm actually home closer to 1-1:30 AM so the "same day" is a bit illusory).

Is LX J worth a really long day over UA J?
Am I insane for thinking spending a night at LHR makes more sense than getting home many hours sooner?

When I checked in for a flight from LAX today, the person working the desk asked me if I always wear yellow socks when I fly. I do. It started almost 30 years ago, when a four year old niece was trying to get me something for Christmas. I made an off-the-cuff comment about flying. She found a Continental ticket jacket and liked the thin, gold stripe in the logo. She called it yellow and got me a tube of yellow socks “for flying.”

I only have one pair left of the original half dozen. I’ve replaced them many times. So if you see someone rushing to or from a United flight with obscenely bright yellow socks, it’s ContinentalFan. I can’t be the only one with an idiosyncrasy. Anyone else?
Note they are not on the same reservation, did not book together, etc. They have their on frequent flyer numbers and KTNs in their reservation. Somehow UAs system attached the father’s birthdate to the son’s reservation, so son got rejected at security on the way here. Had to go back, get everything fixed. Father was already through security no issues. Father flying home today - birthdate is now messed up on his reservation too.

It’s given us a laugh this weekend.

I have an upcoming flight in Domestic F. I started looking at the items that UA's serving, and just out of personal preference, many of the items look unappetizing, or some I've never heard of. I've heard of FAs grabbing Y items for J customers, but I don't know if this can be done now that Pre-order started in Y. Is there anyway for an F pax to pre-order a Y item? I don't mind paying for it, just would like something better than a snack box.

Second, does anyone know if the Cheese plate is plated by the FAs? I can do that as long as the olives are kept separate, since I can't have them (allergic), nor the juice. If the FAs can keep them separate, I can do that.

If not, I'll just enjoy the salad, bread, and desert.

Hello,
I have been a UA Gold or 1K over the last 15 years. In 2024 I had to move to India for family reasons and I intend to be here for at least a few more years. I traveled enough with Star Alliance within India and Asia to qualify for Star Gold but since I could not complete 4 segments with United, I was bumped down to a regular member. I wrote to UA and explained the situation and I got a canned answer to basically go pound sand. Which airline would suit me best to obtain status while I am in Asia and predominantly in India. I do not particularly like flying Air India for international trips. Appreciate any pointers.
