Hi everyone,

Here is my question.

I booked a double room for the night of 16 to 17 May in a French Ibis style.

My plans have changed, but not my friend's so we can keep the booking.

I will be on my own in Copenhagen during the same night and plan to stay at another Ibis Style.

If I keep both bookings under my name, I am wondering if there will be any issues either at check in or out, and then for points & stays crediting.

Have any of you been in this situation : 2 rooms in 2 different hotels for the same night?

Thank you.

I saved over $700 on an upcoming 4-night stay later this month by rebooking under this promo. (My savings would have been roughly $1,000 if I had rebooked the same room, but I took advantage of this to upgrade to a full suite.).

I was quite happy to see this.

Having to go to Biarritz for a weekend, Sofitel being too expensive and with mixed reviews, I tried this MGallery and did not regret it at all. Great hotel and I strongly recommend it.

It’s a former Radisson Blu hotel (I don’t know when the branding changed, but your CC statement will still show Radisson). It’s a modern building not necessarily having a lot of charm, but offering a modern and pleasant product. It’s located a few minutes walking from the heart of downtown, along the sea above the Baie des Basques surf beach. It’s easy to reach from BIQ airport by taxi or a quick bus ride. There are a lot of nice restaurants and bars less than 5 min walking from the hotel.

I was nicely welcomed a s a Diamond member. The hotel was fully booked during my stay and for all the days after, but despite this, I was upgraded to a very nice Deluxe panoramic corner room (from a booked Superior room). Free weekend Diamond breakfast was acknowledged at check-in.
Room :

very good size, lot of natural light (I always truly enjoy corner rooms). Nice sea view. Room amenities included : bathrobes, slippers, beach/pool towels, Nespresso machine, minibar with free content (water, fruit juices), safety box. Lot of space for clothes and suitcases.

Nice rooftop restaurant (called la Petite Plage) & bar + heated swimming pool. The restaurant is very popular, so advance booking is highly recommended. Food was excellent. The restaurant is also where you have breakfast with a good quality buffet.

I redeemed the electronic drink voucher for a glass of wine (I could have any wine on the menu).

All staff members I interacted with were great.

The hotel has a Spa which I didn’t try.

Checkout time is at 11 am ! this is the only criticism I could make on this hotel as this is too early of course. I would have loved to have a late checkout at 4 pm as my flight back to CDG was at 6 something, but I saw that the hotel was fully booked, so I was sure to obtain eventually only 1 pm max, which was useless to me, so I didn’t ask and left the hotel at 11am with luggage stored.

In conclusion, a lovely hotel where I will return without hesitation.

My daughter and her boy friend will be staying with us during that stay- in a second room - but booked and paid by me. So the second room is under my name.
Will they get the above named privileges through my status, or not?

PS-will I earn full status and reward points to my Accor account, for the second room?
I guess, besides paid access to the lounge by being a guest on the club/executive (or Fairmont Gold ) floors, one can get access via Diamond status for the Fairmont lounges and Platinum status for the Raffles lounges?

I had the unfortunate mistake of booking this hotel for four days.

It is a very poor hotel, and IMO does not meet the standards that a Mercure hotel should have.

Upon arrival, there was no greeting, smile, or anything from the receptionist. I asked if there were safe deposit boxes in the rooms or in the reception area. The person who checked me did not know whether the hotel had safe deposit boxes or not. He called some to ask. The hotel does not have any safe deposit boxes. The individual then asked me why a safe deposit box was so important to me, and asked me what I wanted to put in one. I told him that I would prefer not to answer his question. It was none of his business.

The room is old; it certainly needs an update to the 21st century. The pillows on the bed were thin, flat, and disgusting. The wifi was hit and miss, and the furniture was from another era. I will say that the room was clean and the bathroom ok. I did not partake of the breakfast.

At check out, there was no interaction with the elderly male receptionist, only a grunt when I said I was checking out.

Ibis Budget Hotels beat this hotel hands down. Perhaps Mercure should start a new line of hotels, call Mercure Budget Hotels.

I know some people have in the past reported their experience in this hotel, but I don't believe it has its thread, and personally, when doing a search, I find it better to find a hotel-specific (or at least city specific) thread than have to go through dozens of pages of general "experience" threads so thought I would start one.

Accor has an interesting if uneven portfolio of hotels in Central Europe, and notably in Bulgaria, where a somewhat unusual 5* hotel is located, MGallery Maison Sofia.

1) The hotel:

Maison Sofia is unusual in a number of ways. It is a boutique hotel of three floors (plus lower/underground floor which aims to offer some level of luxury, but is located in a relatively suburban part of the city, a good 30 minutes walk South East of the Palace of Culture, which I would consider the first "entry" point to the city centre though you could also access further east.

The hotel has a somewhat "leisure" feel to it, in part because of its pretty garden , and in part thanks to a relatively extensive health and spa area with gym, a 20 metre long swimming pool, hammam and sauna area.

The hotel also offers a bar/restaurant.

The location is somewhat odd and may feel a little offputting to many. You are sort of off some fairly large highways (though easily crossable with proper pedestrian crossings in the immediate surroundings of the hotel), industrial and commercial areas to the South and West, typical former communist residential area of high rise buildings to the north (not rough, not overly luxurious though it becomes so a bit further on), and the city largest park not far to the east (but having tried to walk through it back to the hotel once during my stay, I would warn anyone trying to do the same that this involves literally walking several kilometres on the side of a major motorway and even, at one point if you do it all the way from the North, crossing one such motorway on a mostly erased pedestrian crossing with no light and fully speeding cars. To cut a long story short, after 5 minutes, I decided my only option short of turning back and walking back several kilometres was to use my "Jakarta crossing" technique, which effectively involves starting to slowly but steadily walk on, crossing the road without looking either left or right, without stopping, without hesitating, and just hoping that the cars speeding towards you will end up deciding to stop rather than kill you which they thankfully did. In short, not the recommended path.)

Despite the weird location, which is however convenient to the airport (about 10-15 minutes by car) the hotel has a certain charm, the building could be pretty in some ways, the garden is actually quite nice and well kept, the boutique feel is distinct and I personally love a hotel with extensive health and spa facilities.

The room:

The hotel offers a number of different rooms and suites. Some overlook the gardens, others the front of the hotel and somewhat less glamourous surroundings. Some rooms come with balconies.

Bulgaria is quite cheap by European standards so for a very decent price of about €120/night with flex rate and breakfast included, I could book a deluxe suite.

With my diamond status, the hotel kindly upgraded me to the larger and prettier "premium suite" which overlooks the garden rather than the back and is on the top floor with a bit of an attic feel. I attach a few photos.

My suite was actually quite nicely decorated. Walls have some flower-type patterns moulded which are actually quite nice, it has an open plan loft design (ie not separate rooms) but quite tasteful, and it is surprisingly quite nicely decorated. It has four large windows and plenty of natural light.

The living room area has proper and comfortable sofas, the king bed is comfortable in the sleeping part, there is a second coffee table with armchairs, and a shower room area (annoyingly no bathtub) with sinks and separate toilets. The lighting system is not too impossible to understand which is a plus.

My sense is that when the hotel was built, the owners must have aimed to do something quite luxurious here and put taste, money and effort in the work and in a way it shows.

At the same time, the issue is that since that time, I think that the hotel has been left to deteriorate quite a bit, and whilst the cosmetics of the room are nice, the sense of wear and tear are unmistakable: there is a mini fridge in the room but it was not working at all (the light goes on so it is not an electricity problem but it is and remain room temperature all the time), and the temperature control of the shower was broken too.

Service:

Unfortunately, it is not only the hardware that could do with some TLC. The service is also fairly hit and miss not to say shaky.

To give a first example, I wrote to the hotel to provide my ETA and ask what was the best way to come to the airport. I was kindly and quickly answered told the best options were a taxi or the hotel could organise a car. My status was also acknowledged. Great. I wrote back asking how much a hotel car would be. That was never answered nor was there any further contact. Less great.

Second example, when I checked in, there was no shower towel and no shower mat in the room. Only two small hand towels. Pretty bad for a suite! There were slippers in the room but no bathrobes, I had to ask for one (quite useful for a hotel with a spa and pool area!).

Third example, as mentioned I had breakfast included and on the last day I was leaving very early. I asked reception if I could get a bit of fruit or yoghurt and they said they would order me a take away breakfast package I would pick up at reception. They reconfirmed the order and the time. But when I went down to check out, the package was nowhere to be found. I wasted 10 minutes with the reception guy visiting various floors and so on whilst my taxi was waiting and ended up just asking him to stop looking so I could leave.

Fourth example, I gave my card at check in, but when I ordered room service on the first evening, initially, they didn't want me to charge it to the room because I "hadn't left a deposit". They were actually quite nice and told me they would sort it out with reception when I said I would prefer not to pay cash or card but wanted to charge to the room and they did but it was a bit weird.

There were lots of similar small issues or slightly underwhelming service issues. For instance, the hotel will only provide two coffee pods (1 regular 1 decaf) for the Lavazza coffee machine in the room. I was on my own so could manage but it was the same for people with double or triple rooms which seems rather silly. Towels felt like the sort you'd get in a French 2* hotel in the 1980s (ie pretty bad).

Staff was not unfriendly but unevenly competent and sometimes not particularly bothered. Nobody ever bothered to check my room number at breakfast (though they did with various other people. It seemed random (as it happened I had paid for it so wouldn't mind but it said something).

I would say that service doesn't aim for luxury. No turndown, fairly basic interactions, request to have room cleaned whilst I was going out in the morning as I wanted to work in the room in the afternoon was considered with bewilderment as though I had ask to eat the reception clerk's first born or something, answered with a "not sure we can" but it was done.

Status recognition and perks:

As mentioned, my status was acknowledged in an initial email contact (unprompted) and I was told they would try to assign me a nice room. They did and the upgrade from deluxe to premium suite was appreciated (one category but many hotels don't upgrade at suite level). It was explained to me in rather curious terms at check in ("because you have been very loyal to our hotel" (where I had never stayed before) but anyway, nice.

No welcome amenity at all but don't really care that much about those.

Welcome drink is not via the app even though it shows it. Instead, you get a beautifully post communist bureaucratic affair involving a different colour of keycard holder (black instead of blue) with no fewer than three signatures which you take to the bar where it is dutifully detached. It says the drink can be house wine, beer or soft. The bartender who was one of the nicer and more proactive staff members also offered to make a cocktail, I asked for a fresh squeezed grapefruit juice instead as she had just received grapefruit and that was done without issue and much appreciated.

Food, drink, and health and spa area:

Breakfast is average. Shockingly for Bulgaria, the Kiselo mliako (yoghurt) was very mediocre and the tarator pretty poor and watery. Those are two major national prides (with good reason) so that was annoying.

The breakfast spread was not bad but quite repetitive and annoyingly, things were not really replaced . You could spend 30 minutes without yoghurt or fruit being replenished. There is a hot buffet section too and made to order fried eggs and omelettes which I didn't try. There is shopska salad and a few Bulgarian spreads but not of great quality. Coffee machine is good, juice is poor.

I tried room service once. There restaurant menu is not hugely inspiring but got a Bulgarian mixed grill which was ok - essentially various iterations of sausages, patty, and chicken. Ok. WIne list is expensive, bottles start around €35 or so which I thought was a lot.

The spa area suffers from the same wear and tear as the rest of the hotel. Jacuzzi doesn't work and probably hasn't for a long time, a lot of broken tiles -some looking a little dangerous in the pool, and at least half of the lockers in the changing room didn't work. Having said that, I really liked that part of the hotel, the pool was large and warm and typically not too busy, Hammam and sauna are nice (mixed gender and to be used with swimming costumes to the shock of some German guests)

Overall, this is a fairly "different" hotel with both a lot to like and a lot that can make one hesitate. I thought it had some charm and loved having extensive spa facilities. I thought my room was very good despite the lack of bathtub and very reasonably priced for its standard. At the same time, for my purposes, the location is far from ideal compared to Sofia's other high end hotels and maintenance and service were a little below standard. Perfect it is not, but in a weird sort of way, I enjoyed my stay there.
In what world do they think it's okay to knowingly sell reservations knowing you won't be able to provide benefits, then pull the rug with a crappy apology like this. In the minimum provide some points as compensation.

I understand that there is some kind of legal dispute :O but it doesn't mean guests need to be treated this way. (My stay is this weekend and it's non refundable  ) And of course I had paid with points :D
I note the property is not associated with any of their main brands (whether Sofitel, Mecure, even IBIS) so am guessing that is why ii) has happened - but the property I note is promoted thru their Resorts link

Any suggestions what the Status/Reward earning rate should be - as though there is the FOREX issue to fathom; I can't work out what multiplier they are using for the property?

I recently completed a short stay at the Pullman Budapest, and since I don't believe that there is a thread dedicated to it, I thought that I would start one.

With the closure (still not clear to me if it is permanent or temporary?) of the Sofitel, the Pullman bills itself as the only Accor "5 star" property in Budapest and also in my view is probably the best located of current ones.

There is a lot to like about this hotel and also a number of things that I found a little disappointing.

1) The hotel:

For anyone with a long enough memory, the Pullman Budapest is in fact the Hard Rock Hotel. It is on the Pest side of the City and in my view very well located. It is a couple of minutes walk from the Opera and Andrassy utca (the posh shopping street in Budapest), about 10 minutes walk from what I would argue are the "coolest" parts of the city just the other side of Andrassy and towards the historical Jewish quarter, Walking in the opposite direction, you are about 15 minutes walk from Deak Ferenc ter where the express airport bus (100E) arrives with Vaci street (the main pedestrian street) just behind, about 20 minutes walk from Parliament and the Duna (Danube) or about 25 minutes from the main central market (there are a couple of smaller markets nearer). Let's put it that way, whether you are after eating out, walking around, culture, shopping, or business, chances are it will be very close.

The hotel itself is effectively made of two buildings joined together by bridges. You will know if you are in the first or second building as your room number will start by "1" or "2" but it all is entirely joined and otherwise you might never realise it is two buildings id you do not look outside when you walk.is a little lacking in public areas. There is a lobby with reception which is sort of pretty, bar and restaurant next to it, and seemingly some meeting rooms too. There is apparently a parking underground and a fitness centre but no pool or spa, which I find a little sad given Budapest's great tradition in that area.

The restaurant is billed as "Italian American" which is probably about the last possible thing I would have wanted as a foreigner visiting one of the capitals with the richest culinary traditions in Europe. I'm not saying that every 5* in Budapest needs a Gundel or a contemporary Hungarian restaurant but well, almost every other one I have stayed at offers either classic or modern local inspiration food outlets and I would argue that there is a reason for it. Incidentally, the room service food was not too bad, but it just wasn't what I wanted to eat.

The restaurant also serves the daily breakfast with once again very few local options (a bit of szalami, Debrecen sausages, and a "Hungarian scrambled egg" or "Hungarian omelette" which seems to be always available despite not being on the menu, as well as some small very Hungarian things like bee pollen and paprika cream, but for instance, who decided that it was a good idea to offer US style pancakes in the country that does the most wonderful palacsinta in the world?

FInally, the hotel was built with a rooftop bar which I was looking forward to using but this has been permanently closed.

The room:

I had booked a "premium room" and interestingly, reception contacted me pro-actively to say that unfortunately they had not been able to offer an upgrade because the hotel was fully booked (true) which I found positive (not that lack of upgrade of course but bothering to message me). I checked and saw that better rooms were available after the first night so I asked if it would be possible to change after a day and that was answered positively. By the time I arrived though, a junior suite had become available and was offered. This was a one or two category upgrade depending on how you count (in theory, the elite room is in between premium room and junior suite, but in practice, the elite rooms tend to be more expensive than the junior suites on the website!).

The corner room was certainly large and felt nicely decorated and well maintained. It is a large single space with a bed area, a couple of sitting chairs and a full dining table with chairs. Separately, there is a large and mostly empty bathroom area with sinks, shower enclosure and toilet enclosure.

The room was very spacious but to me, didn't really make the right choices when it came to using the space. For instance, it is impressive to have a full dining table but I would personally have preferred a proper sofa. Conversely, whilst I don't use one, some people might have liked a desk.

As for the bathroom area, it was very large but very sparse. My personal pet peeve is why not put a bathtub whilst there would have been ample space for one.

The other thing I didn't like at all about the room is that the windows cannot be opened at all (they are locked) and also, mine, on the fifth floor of the second building was encased in some sort of metal work which I personally disliked. You can see what I mean on the second photo I posted (and it was the same on every window in the room). I won't say it felt like a prison because it would be absurd but certainly, I would have preferred normal windows than windows covered by that heavy metal work even though I imagine it is meant to prevent the heat from building up in the summer.

Service:

As mentioned, my first contact with reception was impressive. I appreciated being pro-actively warned about the lack of upgrade and also the reactiveness when I asked if it would be possible to change. Check in was also very good and finally getting the upgrade from the start was positive.

Beyond that, however, I would say that service was a little hit or miss.

One thing that really annoyed me is that whilst the room was clean when I arrived, I felt the cleaning team were too insistent in trying to convince me not to get it cleaned thereafter. There is one of those signs well in evidence on the bed that if you want to save the planet or whatever, just hang the sign to say you don't want the room cleaned and you'll get an extra 100 reward points per night. I'm sure some people are happy to do that and that's great, but for me, having my room tidied up daily is part of the luxurious pampering feel of being in an excellent hotel so I ignored it. So far, so good, they offer, I ignore.

However, literally every morning, the cleaners would try and catch me to ask if I "needed" my room cleaned today. Well, yes I do since I chose not to hang the little sign, but they asked again and when I said "yes please", frankly, they looked really disappointed and I found that quite annoying.

Conversely, the hotel offers a (limited) turndown service (tidy bed, check water, empty rubbish, leave a little "basic" chocolate - but for instance not replace coffee pods or towels). Nice, but I got that 2 nights out of the five I stayed for no obvious reason.

On the other hand, the hotel offers large bottle of still and sparkling filtered waters (I enjoyed the sparkling) and replenished them pro-actively., There is also a coffee machine which uses pods but is very good (much nicer coffee than Nespresso).

Welcome amenity was a lengthy handwritten (and not very readable) note saying that since my profile said I like Champagne (I do), they hoped I would enjoy the Cava (Frenchly bite my lip but ok, intention was nice anyway) and a plate with three little chocolates in some cool decor though annoyingly, I had one of the first night thinking I would make them last and they took the plate away when they did the room (punishment for asking the cleaning? ;) )

Verdict:

As I said, there is plenty to like about this hotel, not least its great location, generally nice staff, and good treatment of elite customers as well as a modern feel. At the same time, in some ways, I was a little underwhelmed and I would say that to me, this felt more like a very strong 4* than a 5^ hotel, especially considering the competition of many excellent 5* hotels in Budapest.

To me, a 5* hotel would have put a bathtub in the room given the available space, a 5* wouldn't try to pressure guests into not having their room cleaned and would do turndown consistently, a 5* would have enabled you to open windows and not trapped you behind some weird metal structure that obstructs the views.

I was also a bit underwhelmed by the facilities. Breakfast was ok but not great and somewhat repetitive, I missed a pool or at least a sauna/hammam/spa area, and in my personal opinion, the wrong choice was made in terms of the restaurant theme and even taking their choice for granted, I would at least have liked a couple of Hungarian options on the room service menu (seriously, I doubt any other major hotel in the city doesn't at least offer a gulyas soup on their room service menu and at least one Hungarian dessert?!)

I do think that this is the best Accor has to offer in the city at the moment, and I would return if wanting to use Accor, but if I'm honest, given that the hotel was priced similarly to at least some other 5* properties in the city (not all as some do get very expensive), I would argue that if one doesn't care about booking Accor there are probably better options available for that intended level of luxury.

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a stay at Raffles Bali this August and noticed on Google Maps that the Raffles Residences construction site is directly adjacent to the resort.

Has anyone stayed in an Ocean Pool Villa recently? I’m specifically wondering if the construction is still active and if it impacts the "ultra-private" vibe (e.g., noise, dust, or workers overlooking the pools). Also, does the access road see a lot of heavy vehicle traffic?

Any recent experiences or advice on which villa numbers to request to avoid the site would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Michael
