For the WestJet UK/EU flights to Canada, does WS generally allow issuance of boarding passes at OLCI? Or is a check in desk visit compulsory for everyone to get issued a boarding pass?

I booked a comfort seat row 5. Closer to departure date I get an email asking if I want to Bid on a Premium seat. Biding started at a little over $600. so I didn't bother. So 24 hours to the minute before departure I check in online hoping for an upgrade to Premium. Well I didn't get offered an upgrade instead during the check-in and a couple of pages in I am instead offered to upgrade to a premium seat by paying an additional $220.00. Again I declined and my boarding pass was printed with my original seat. Selling upgrades right at check-in is new to me instead of Westjet upgrades for being a Platinum Flyer. This flight has been cancelled due to Maintenance requirements according to WestJet, the cancellation date was April 25th, some 2 months before the flight. No one thought to let me know. I was rebooked onto WS588, unfortunately that flight departs YYZ some 3 hours before I land there. Having not flown WestJet recently I was surprised to find that on the next day there was only 1 YYZ-YOW flight, 24 hours after my cancelled one. I had no idea WS was out of the YYZ - YOW market.

Given the lead time for the "maintenance" cancellation, I am not expecting any thing in the form of compensation, but what if anything ca I expect as due care. As the delay is 24 hours would WS be on the hook to provide with a flight on another carrier at their expense? What other options are there.
