Hey folks, I'm visiting Johannesburg in August for the first time for a conference, staying in Sandton near the Gautrain station, office is in Waterfall City and conference is at Gallagher Convention Centre, any tips for transiting to/from the airport? I assume the Gautrain is safe enough for this but am I right? And transiting between hotel, office and conference, is Uber okay?

Also looking for any recommendations or tips for places to eat or things I can do in the little spare time I have.

Cheers.

Hello fellow travelers,

We have a long layover at NBJ of 15 hours, arriving on a Sunday of October 2026 around 7PM.

Looking for a budget friendly solution to our night there. I see the airport is quite far from downtown and there is not much infrastructure yet as it is a new airport.
Someone that knows the new airport: can you tell what is an approximate ride-hailing app ride cost? Or if there is a train/bus to the city available?

Thank you!! Jose

I'm reaching out because I've run out of options, and I'm genuinely hoping someone here can help me.

Earlier this year, I lost my black suitcase at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport while transiting on flights ET846 / ET604 to Beijing. Inside the suitcase is approximately 300GB of original raw footage — the entirety of my master's graduation documentary thesis. Without it, I cannot complete my degree.

Here's what I know so far:

CCTV footage confirmed the bag was picked up by airport staff.

Despite multiple visits to Lost and Found, no one has been able to locate it.

I later received a photograph from a contact who is now unreachable, showing my suitcase inside what appears to be the airport's warehouse storage facility — a warehouse tag is still visibly attached to the bag.

I have sent numerous emails to Ethiopian Airlines' Lost and Found department with little to no response.

I have an open case with Ethiopian, but progress has been extremely slow.

I believe the suitcase is physically sitting in a warehouse somewhere at the airport — it simply hasn't been properly logged or returned.

I am willing to pay a reasonable fee to anyone who can help follow up in person at the airport, speak to the right people, or assist in locating the bag. I am completely serious about this — this luggage represents years of work and my entire academic future.

If you know anyone who works at Bole Airport, Ethiopian airlines ground operations, or the Lost and Found / warehouse department, please don't hesitate to reach out. Even the smallest lead could make all the difference.

Thank you so much. 🙏

few Nairobi questions

I'm in Nairobi for a handful of days second week of June for a work meeting. I'm arriving the morning before my meeting starts, so that day is definitely free. I may be free the following early morning before my meeting kicks off.

I'm leaving immediately after my meeting finishes, so that 24hr period on arrival is my only chance to do something not work related.

I was thinking of Nairobi national park, having never been on safari (anywhere). A few questions for the veterans/ experienced:

1. I know that an early morning safari is preferable, but if I can't manage that on the Monday morning, will an early evening safari on the Sunday be worthwhile?

2. I'll be travelling solo: how best to arrange a guide/driver for my safari -- via the hotel is easiest, but unlikely to be the best value. But some optimality of quality/safety and value would be ideal...and if the delta with the hotel is minimal, that's also fine.

3. Either way, what's a decent ballpark price for a driver/guide for a morning or evening safari at Nairobi national park? If I book the entrance, do I need to book for my driver/guide also?

4. I'm not going to get a local SIM, will probably use an eSIM like Ubigi, and apparently that makes getting the M-Pesa app impossible. Is this a massive mistake?

5. If I don't get M-Pesa/local SIM, how much cash should I take, if any? All meals will be at my meeting, so the only time I'm going to need cash at all is on that Sunday arrival.

6. Any other tips/ recommendations?

thanks in advance!
