Hey fellow west-coasters, Northern Nevadans/Californians, and specifically, Renoites.

Is anybody else here as fed up as I am with the continued lack of service to/from Reno? The axe I'm grinding is with AA and AS, both of whom have terminated our lifeline to LAX (AA a few years back, AS more recently). Our city punches above its weight by many measures compared to peers with daily LAX service (Boise, Albuquerque, Des Moines, Santa Fe, NW Arkansas), yet has ZERO connectivity within the One World Alliance to/from the West Coast's most important gateway.

Consider:
1. RNO is already a much bigger station than SAF, XNA, and DSM
2. SAF has daily service to LAX and ABQ has multiple daily; both metros have population growth about 1/5th of Reno
3. Among these peers, 10-year GDP growth in Reno is second only to NW Arkansas; same in terms of PCI growth
4. Among these peers, Reno/Tahoe is by far the leading tourism economy
5. Although Reno/Sparks is a small metro, it quickly becomes second-largest when considering Carson City/Douglas County/Lake Tahoe, and a much larger total catchment
6. The lack of connectivity on OW carriers is creating substantial leakage, pushing customers like myself to UA/DL

Although the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority (RTAA) is investing heavily in infrastructure as evidenced by the muti-billion dollar MoreRNO program and nearly doubling gate capacity, both RTAA and the city have done a VERY POOR job incentivizing airlines to stay here. Yes, they offer nominal fee waivers and marketing support (something like $50-100k for new routes in year 1-2), but this is very weak compared to other growing markets. There is no large-scale coordinated funding effort in coordination with the Chamber of Commerce, corporate coalitions, tourism boards, etc., to fund MRGs, ensure demand, and support network growth.

I know this is probably all in vain and will fall on deaf ears. AA and AS would have none of it unless RTAA gets their act together. I'm planning to write RTAA monthly to make this case and just thought I'd share in case anyone else has the time and inclination to do so.

If anyone on here has any experience with this kind of lobby and has any suggestions, I'd love to hear about it.

Advice on itinerary for 11 days in Utah

I'm visiting Utah with my family (2 adults, 3 kids 12,10,10yo) in early August (can't change dates) and want to visit the iconic NP sites, but also have some low-key days and some activity days without much driving. We're entering Utah from a drive through the Tetons and had planned to stop in Vernal for two nights so we could see Dinosaur National Monument. Then we were planning on heading to Moab to see Arches and Canyonlands. We're into short hikes, bouldering (climbing) and I'm into mountain biking so we want to fit in some of that. We'd also be up for guided adventure activities (e.g. white water rafting, canyon rope swing). We're then unsure whether to stay in Moab for the full 10 days, or whether we should head down to Bryce Canyon/Zion area. Our final day we would need to head back to SLC to go home and it seems to be a similar drive from Moab as it is from Bryce Canyon. We're mainly looking to stay in whole houses rather than hotels.

Key questions:

Is it worth heading SW to Bryce Canyon/Zion area, and if so, for how long? And where to stay.

Is Vernal an OK place to stay? I've heard mixed things. I'm not looking for a touristy destination, just somewhere we can break up a long journey on the way to Moab that's near Dinosaur.

Would you book accom in Moab or further out?

Any suggestions for activities/unmissable places?

Suggestions for mountain bike rental/guided tour (e.g. Porcupine Rim/Whole Enchilada).

Suggestions for bouldering spots (V1 to V5 mainly, although my 12 yo just sent his first V8!). Iconic photo spots for the bonus point.

Is there anywhere we should stay (hotel) for one night that's within an hour or so or SLC? Need a chill night/day before we fly home on a red-eye.

Any other advice would be gratefully received!!!

DIA will create walkway to all concourses using underground tunnels

Denver International Airport officials plan to convert a dormant underground tunnel into pedestrian walkways, creating an alternative people-moving system so that air travelers and workers no longer have to rely on DIA’s trains for reaching concourses.

Design work will begin this year on the project to repurpose this existing baggage tunnel, adjacent to a tunnel that carries the electric trains, at an estimated cost between $300 million and $700 million, Denver Mayor Michael Johnston said. Johnston planned to announce the plans on Tuesday morning. Construction is scheduled to start next year, with the 17-foot-wide walkways opening in 2028.

DIA’s trains broke down 262 times over the past two years, airport records show. While most of the breakdowns were brief, lasting an average of four minutes, DIA officials say the lack of a backup option as the airport grows, toward a projected 120 million travelers a year by 2045, increasingly causes problems.

Repurposing the tunnel, built before the airport opened in 1995, “gives us the most affordable and fastest way to solve the challenge,” Johnston said.
