The announcement is exciting in itself - the biggest investment ever - but the wider plans they are talking about should be exciting for anyone frustrated with Air NZ, and they should be anxious.
Plus, the canapes are excellent as well, and they lit up a building in QF colours,

I once read somewhere that people regretted watching YouTube videos of “influencers” (🤮) demonstrating premium cabins as it spoiled a bit of the experience.

I will hopefully be flying J for the first time ever for a 10 hour flight with Mrs 40love on Air NZ 787-9 2025 refit (not in the Luxe front row seats). It is an overnight flight.

Is there anything we might do or consider ahead of this flight? Any “I wish I had known” or “I wish I had…” tips would be great - but keen not to have the experience myself potentially spoiled (which is why I’m asking here rather than searching online as I deliberately steered clear of doing that).

Many thanks, and hoping now there aren’t any IROPs!

Hey Team, I (with the help of my AI friend) decided to make an Air NZ points and flight tracker, more just so I could keep track of my own flights to be honest. But then one thing led to the next and here we are with a dashboard I guess you could say very similar to Air NZ's app. But it can also show (and export) a list of all your flights ever taken in a nice-ish UI, if you have that data recorded somewhere in a spreadsheet currently.
More importantly for me was that I wanted to see (if you aren't already top tier) when the oldest flight was within the 12-month rolling window is so I could see how many SP I'd be losing within that window.

Anyway, no pressures to use it but just thought I'd share it with the team too. Happy for any feedback or suggestions too! I suspect I could be updating a few things (well hopefully!) if Air NZ finally decide to listen and fix up all of the Koru issues here!

A reminder, when Air NZ delays or cancels a flight, which seems to be happening far more recently the airline’s first explanation is not always the end of the matter and you are often entitled to compensation even though their communications may imply otherwise.

The Ministry of Transport’s monthly OTP data is worth reading. https://www.transport.govt.nz/area-o...me-performance

Recent Trans-Tasman data shows Air NZ cancellations on multiple routes where Qantas recorded 0.0% cancellations on the same sectors. Overall Air NZ cancellations are around 2-6% and most other airlines average close to 0%

For NZ domestic flights:
Under the Civil Aviation Act, if the delay/cancellation is within the airline’s control — e.g. engineering, staffing, overbooking, operational issues — passengers may be entitled to proven reasonable costs caused by the delay, up to 10x the ticket cost. Keep receipts.

For international flights:
The Montreal Convention applies. For delay claims, the current passenger liability limit is 6,303 SDR (around NZD13,000). The airline is not liable if it proves it took all reasonable measures to avoid the damage, or that it was impossible to do so. That is not the same as simply saying “weather” or “uncontrollable”.

Key point: ask what actually happened.

Was it weather? Engineering? Aircraft swap? Crew? Customs timing? Prioritisation of another route? Upgrades processed while disrupted paid passengers were left behind?

Use FlightRadar24, FlightAware, PlaneMapper, airport data, MOT reports, emails, screenshots, chat logs, and call records. Compare what the airline says later with what happened in real time.

Also ask for:

call recordings / transcripts

live chat transcripts

internal case notes

aircraft assignment history

rerouting availability

cabin availability

upgrade decisions affecting disrupted passengers

Airlines know the rules. Passengers should too.

Hi all, I think I know the answer is 'no' but just in case it works differently at smaller airports in NZ, I have 4 passengers booked in on the late ZQN-AKL tomorrow on standard seat fares (not flexi) and noted that several of the earlier flights have 8-10 seats available. It would be good to leave earlier but changing the flight in the app currently would double the cost of the trip, so not doing that. Given how quick it is to get through security etc at ZQN, is it worth our showing up in the morning and seeing if an agent is kind enough to move us without a charge? It's been 5+ years since I regularly flew domestic NZ but when I last did so, it was pretty common that I could ask nicely in the lounge and get moved to an earlier flight. Not sure if that's still a possibility, though, and perhaps especially not with 4 pax.

Hi all,

Long time reader, first time poster. I considered myself an aviation enthusiast, or at least an Air NZ points nerd until I stumbled upon this page and have almost no idea what language you guys are talking in sometimes with the acronyms.

That said, I have a return fair AKL - JFK late June to mid July and wondered how you know which plane type of their 3 versions may be used?

I have PE ticketed with G RU there and E RU ( or KP RU?!) back. When fare bought it was the V1 layout, and checking for upgrade after a couple weeks the plane layout changed to V3 (?) with double BP (J?) Luxe seating. It has since changed back to the older style in the last day or so. Each change has moved my PE seat selection and I am now in a much less favourable seat than I initially booked. I’m hopeful for upgrade and shouldn’t worry about it until departure, but until then I’m trying to speculate which aircraft it could be. Obviously on the back end they are tagging a tail number to the flight that indicates which configuration may be used or are they basing it off load factors to know? Currently AKL - JFK flight has 1 PE and 5 J seats left in dummy booking and I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t have a more premium cabin to sell more premium tickets when 2 months to go and football World Cup on.

Recently did J return to Perth in an older 777 and a new 787 layout, but doing JFK in the old 787 layout would be really.. less exciting.

Maybe there is no way to know, just curious.

Unrelated, but if anyone also knows what happens to your Elite Partner when you qualify for Koru Black would also be appreciated. Do they drop off and you’d need to give them Koru Black Nominee or do they stay Koru Platinum Nominee until that tier level would have expired?

Appreciate your wisdom.

I get throughly confused about multiple elements of AP, including rollover points. I don’t see any clarifications in the new Koru t&c, so hoping members can help me understand.

I’m Elite and by the end of my membership year (end June), I’ll have 1570/2250 of the 810/1350 needed to requalify for 2026/27, so of course I qualify for 26/27 Elite. I’ll have 1570/2250 towards the 1400/2400 needed for a banked Elite year, so I'll be short by 150.

1) So if I don’t push to get another 150 SP by end of June, then will the excess 760 qualifying (ie, 1570-810) and 900 total SP (2250-1350) roll to the first day of my 2026/27 membership year, meaning that with just another 50/450 in my 2026/27 Elite membership year (MY), I’ll then have qualified for Elite for 2027/28 MY?

2). In the alternate, I could try to get the 150 needed by end June 2026 to earn the banked elite year..

Did I get these calculations correct? Any thoughts on which approach is better? Although option 1 requires a few more overall points to ensure Elite for 2027/28, the rolled over 760/900 does put me 50%/35% of the way to the 1400/2400 needed for a subsequent banked year (ie, 28/29), yes? The rolled over points are just like any other SP accrued in the MY and therefore contribute to my totals for Plat Rew 1, Plat Rew 2, KB, etc.?
