I stay from time to time at a Holiday Inn in Reading, have done for the past 15 or more years, and this time they've sent a NOR1 upgrade through.

It's unlike any I've had before, though. I'm already booked into their top room ("premium", as it's now known, or the Gardenia Suite as it's grandly called on the plaque outside the room), so what can they tempt me with?

Food, apparently, although none of the things I'd normally have there.

The kicker is that I've got diamond status, so the breakfast option would be most unlikely to be taken up anyway!

I've never seen anything like it before. Has anyone else had NOR1 offers for food "upgrades"? 😁

IHG.com system has been inconsistent when selecting two guests and clicking box to add name , sometimes
1. there is one box , for the second name
2. there are two boxes. for 1st guest and 2nd guest ...if this type appears in future, just enter the additional guest as guest #1

The hotel suited my needs well: somewhere close to the airport, given my late arrival in Taiwan, with the added convenience of being able to catch a high-speed train onwards the next day.

The hotel is less than a ten-minute taxi ride from the airport. A journey in a standard yellow cab is inexpensive, but do be careful with Uber: rides from the airport are priced on an hourly basis, with a minimum charge of around TWD 1,500, which can feel disproportionate for such a short trip.

A shuttle service is available, although only at limited times and only to (not from) the airport and the nearby THSR train station (For those who may be interested, there is an outlet shopping centre next to Taoyuan station, offering a range of international luxury brands at discounted prices).

The physical plant, breakfast, gym were all fine. This is about the management.

After settling in, I noticed that TV stations for MSNBC and “liberal” news media were blocked, as was Disney. FoxNews wasn’t. When I called the front desk, they said “A guest must’ve done that. Happens. We’ll have to do a hard reset later.” I tried to do it myself but couldn’t bypass the password protection. (“4547” didn’t even work!)

At checkout the next morning, a diffferent desk person told me “Yeah, guests do that. I can’t help you. They have to reset the TV.”
Looking up the hotel on Yelp, it seems that the manager has blocked those channels for years. And the staff knows, and are lying to you.

I’m not rabidly political, but it’s not right to censor our DirectTV options based on the owner’s beliefs without a heads-up when booking. It’s certainly not consonant with “freedom” and also sits in the neighborhood of “didn’t get what you pay for.” If my kids had wanted to watch the Disney channel, the owner decided that I can’t.

No – having recommended previously this stay was poor – and having arrived from The IC Zhuhai which was cheaper - and to my astonishment took less than 30 minutes door to door I no longer recommend.

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?

Booked Premium - was Upgraded to Standard SeaView. I started off politely explaining that this was a significant downgrade. I confess to “losing it”.

3 night stay and I had booked an additional 2 rooms for MsM’s family for all 3 nights.

We ended up with 1 X Premium (no SeaView). 1 X Standard. 1 X Standard Seaview

I kept the standard Sea View. It was a wreck.

How are the rooms?

Premium are big but standard are small – probably judged unfairly by my irritation. LOL

How is the exec. lounge?

It no longer exists despite elevator signage sending to 4F..

In 2026 a single 100 Mop voucher per stay plus breakfast – for LP holders regardless of not being Diamond.

What was good and what was bad?

GOOD

It is very convenient for the bridge from HK.

Location wise it is also great for the Border Gate to China + Zhuhai – “Portas”.

Local shops and restos are very cheap but mid, market. Not high end. And language is mostly Cantonese and increasingly Putonghua (Mandarin.)

BAD

They have removed the shuttle even to Portas.

Macau’s bus network is great. But it is unbelievably complicated. (X designation usually means XTRA stops. Number plus A/B means.... same start and end point but the route between is completely different!) It took me 3 years living in Macau to start to be slightly competent.

I paid for 9 extra breakfasts – not cheap. On the third day they ran out of rice/bacon/pastry by 08.15. Replenished with grilled half tomatoes.

Got met by management gestapo for not wearing a hair cap in the pool!! Story is too long to tell.

Taxis are hard to find outbound.

Points rate for several rooms was a no brainer for this trip. Cash rate for 3 was 50%+ without breakfast. Points was the same whether 2 or 3. And I again benefited from the points member discount promotion.

Will not return. Great Refurb. Hard product great. Stayed in “High Floor Standard” 2X. Corner Suite 1X and 1Br suite 1X

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?

Usual standard to High Floor UG. Same with Corner suite. This just silly surrounding buildings are below 6 floors or above 19. So view is pretty much the same. And because of only 3 elevators you are better of waiting for elevators on lower floors.

How are the rooms?

Dramatic improvement. I prefer the corner suite over full suite. More light from windows and better usable space than 2 smallish rooms.

The 1 Br comes with a dining area plus a kitchenette. The 2 induction hobs don’t come with any induction cookware (maybe upon request?)

How is the exec. lounge?

Last year I reported “Recently refurbished and is now as good as the very pleasant Residence Club lounge at The New World.”

Still good but on occasions the evening food offer has been silly on occasions. Potato wedges under a lamp where the potos were nigh on raw…!

What was good and what was bad?

GOOD

Location wise it is by far the best IHG option in Manila. Makati is pleasant.

I said last year “A GRAB SUV costs well under US$10 and if lucky takes about 25 minutes to/from all Terminals. (Not rush hour to/fromT3 -be warned)”

They have sorted out the T3 entrance from Skyway. We experienced 20/25-minute trips to all 3 terminals even in rush hour in 2026.

Grab prices were insanely low even for a 6-seater. Max was US$7. And between arrival in early March and departure mid-April gas prices nigh on doubled. Please tip in cash accordingly – good drivers got 2X from us.

BAD

Oh dear the gouging management like in much of The Philippines is embarrassing for MsM.

We got advised by email of a UG from Corner suite - -------to standard room with Lounge access!!! I’ve got a Lounge Pass.

Duty Manager promised to compensation agreed with IHG. Clearly overridden by senior management. And as mentioned I never picked them up on F&B points for De Minimis spends on 2 previous stays. But on this final stay I spent a significant sum. Despite a promise to correct the points are still outstanding.

IHG handled this abysmally. I wasted an hour in the midst of a family party getting it – partially sorted.

“Shockingly poor. You can get 2X the quality for the same price in even the expensive Asian cities like Singapore and Hong Kong. Unfortunately, all mid/high end Manila hotels are extortionately overpriced. Compare the rates at The Regent HK with Raffles in Manila, and complaints about that hotel may go quiet. LOL”

I note the Php has collapsed. But pricing seems to be metricated only as pegged to the US$.

On points it is often decent arbitrage because of the stacked service and tax charges on the cash rate.

Food was all right. Each night featured a different theme (mexican, asian, italian etc.) during dinner. Breakfast was nice as well, with the usual brekkie options from around the European world. The lunch was the worst - not that it wasn't tasty, just not that much to choose from and repeatable.

There are 4 pools (one heated indoor, one outdoor heated, two outdoor not heated). I've spent the majority of time on the outdoor heated pool which is EXCELLENT. Our stay was on the early April and while the outside temperature was very pleasant, regular pools were a bit too cold - except, of course, for that heated outdoor one, which let me stay in water for hours, lol. You can also drink your stuff while being in the pool, which is great, usually hotels don't allow that. Note that this heated outdoor pool is Star Prestige only.

There are also balinese beds in multiple Star Prestige areas that you can lie on for days while also protecting yourself from the sun (if necessary) using the curtains.

The Star Prestige Bar features an excellent view over the bay with comfortable chairs. Good for reading books in the afternoon!

Drinks are very nice - plenty of standard options for alcoholic ones (like espresso martini, aperol spritz, daiquiri etc.), cava, wines, local beers, some mocktails, some smoothies, tea, coffee. You can get them in at least three places, with one being available 9:30-24:00. There was also a daily minibar restock included (2 x 0.5L beer, 200ml prosecco, cola, cola zero, fanta lemon, fanta orange, 2 x sparkling water).

Gym was okay-ish, but had no AC, so it was hot inside.

Minor quirks:

food is not clearly labeled, at least not everywhere and sometimes incorrectly - if you're a vegetarian, vegan, gluten-intolerant or something, you may have to tread carefully
rooms are a bit worn-off, shower has no head and terrible water pressure
no upgrade for the IHG Diamond status (just access to star prestige), but this seems to be the norm in Iberostars, duh
a'la carte food in bar is not included with the all inclusive option
no dedicated hotel parking (although it was easy to park on the street)

In short - this is a great hotel as long as you have Star Prestige (i.e. milestone lounge access or Star Prestige room). Otherwise I wouldn't like it that much.
