Hi everyone,
I’ve been thinking about devaluations recently.
For those sitting on larger balances (say ~300k–1M+ miles), how do you actually manage that risk in practice?
Do you try to redeem as quickly as possible or just accept that devaluations are part of the game?
I’ve spent a few years in finance and have been exploring whether there could be a way to protect against larger devaluations (e.g. 25–30%+), but I’m not sure if it just sounds interesting on paper.
Curious how people here actually think about it.
Thanks!

I met a guy in Pai Thailand over 10 years ago, that now has a farm outside Barcelona Spain. He got married last year privately, but has decided to invite riends and family next week to his farm to celebrste their union over a 3/3 day period. It's last minute, but in some ways, he is like a little brother, and so I would love to surprise him and make it out there. If possible.

I think the real stuff starts like Friday afternoon (May 1st) through Sunday.

I guess I have been in points and miles since 2012, but haven't booked an international leg in over 10 years. And we all know the game and rules change alot.

So I am trying to tap into those people that know the current environment of award availability and tips and tricks to get creative, to solve my issue.

1. I am trying to find any saver business class space.

2. I am open to flying out of any US city.

3. I am open to direct to BCN, US to MAD to BCN, or US to any stopover in another country, then to BCN.

4. Beggars aren't choosers, but if there is a higher luxury product for the main flight, I would probably consider that to have the experience.

5. I have AA miles, UAL miles, MR points, and UR points available.

6. I have searched AA.com, ba.com, and Iberia. If I am doing it right. I have been on UAL.com for the last couple nights, and see some luftansa and Swiss around 90k so I have tried to find where their premium business class metal flies from. I read that Iberia would be the best value and still offer an okay I experience.

7. I have tried from ORD, JFK, IAD, CLT, BOS, MIA, and maybe one more.

I am posting today, and asking for some grace, as I am willing to do all the work, if anyone wants to point any ideas or other things they know to try.

I also know that the game of award booking requires flexibility, patience, and proper expectations. There are unicorns out there, and they can be found, but it may not happen often. So I get that.

Fingers crossed but would love anyone that has any value to send my way. Thanks - JP
