Unfortunately, this is 2016. The 100+ million pageviews/ad-impressions don't pay as much as they used to and advertisers have expectations on the demographics nowadays.

Air travel still involves a demographic group with more disposable income and higher net worth than the rest of society at large. Even for those who see FT as a market full of bottom-fishers, FT is still a rather wealthy demographic group relative to online audiences in general. How does that translate into ad revenue, even as it's less lucrative than it used to be? Not awfully.

The point is that back in 2006 advertisers just went by page impressions, they didn't have much metric to go by. So once you crossed 1 mio+ page impressions you got ad income by just displaying ads on your pages. 10 years later the advertisers can analyse who is being served the ads and what they do with it.

Speaking from the other side of the equation as someone who buys online advertising through an agency, I have to say the reports we get from our agency are incredibly detailed and if we don't hit our target demo we don't pay. @:-)

How they are earning the cash to cover the server costs is beyond me.

And yet I still didn't win anything from the UK site's advent calendar giveaways last month!

So this may be a dumb question...and I don't think this would likely matter that much...but I wonder how readily "memorable" and marketable the name itself is in the international sites, aside from the UK? While I realize English proficiency is generally good in places like Germany (way better than the opposite is in the US for example), does the IF brand name roll off the tongue and become easily memorable and recognizable for what it is? Would IF attract more attention in certain countries if the site name were in the native tongue?

I've turned on many acquaintances to FT by literal word of mouth, and they easily remember "Flyertalk.com" when they're back at home on their computer that evening. I'm not sure a foreign language named website would get remembered and passed around so easily.

English fluency levels and familiarity with American linguistic vernacular/slang/vulgarities is far more extensive (controlling for population size) and superior in the NL, NO, SE than it is in DE.

I'm curious about this too. Any recollection about what was stated and then removed?

Good luck. Also worth seeing what the past was about, though.

ETA: Mostly seems to be writers complaining about unfulfilled promises, financial and otherwise.
