A simplistic explanation.
While I think using them is wrong, hard to determine that there is any financial damage to the hotel. But could you please explain where in the quote of mine I claimed that there was going to be financial damage to the hotel? |

Who are you suggesting is 'paying' when unauthorized codes are used? It is certainly not other travelers.
Here "pay" is used as in the threat "You'll pay for that!" |
The reward boss should just post blueprints for bomb building, but hide behind "don't attempt this unless you're qualified and legally allowed to do so" and see what the Feds think about that.
I wonder how long it would take to get on a no-fly list. A month? Maybe a couple weeks? |

Yes it is. Higher fraction of customers claiming discounts will cause any business to increase its base price or decrease the discount or make some other change that harms legitimate users of the discount.

I seriously doubt that higher use of discount codes makes a hotel raise other rates. It may mean that it takes away the number of available rooms in a lower rate inventory bucket - but it is not 'increasing' rates to other customers.

Corporate bookings were excluded anyways IIRC.
It could be worse. There is one hotel chain in the UK which does not pay affiliate commission if you put a rewards card number in your booking! I don't bother with that one .... |

That's almost as bad as the blogger I heard telling a Chase rep that he wouldn't publish details about the IHG card unless they started pay commissions, despite acknowledging that it was a compelling card offer. |

Indeed, because pointing out deals to your readers is bad if it doesn't also make you a commission.
