We wanted to visit Takachiho Gorge after staying in Beppu, This hotel is a Ryokan self-serve style that offers many of the Ryokan amenities such as a public bath, japan style rooms, and full breakfast and dinner in the most convenient location for the gorge. 

Room

We booked a standard room and got exactly that. It was just big enough for 3 people to sleep comfortably, any more and it would be a little cramped. Tatami style with futon mattresses (you need to set them up yourself as the staff won't do it for you) We had a view of the forest next to the property. Small bathroom, but that's typical in Ryokan. 

Dining

Our rate includes dinner and breakfast the following morning. Very nice dining room and great selections and quality of food. 

Location

We stayed here primarily for the Gorge, but this is a very sacred and important location to Japan's ancient folklore and is the site of many legends and tales of ancient gods. 

We attended a performance of traditional dances that tell part of the creation myth. Very enjoyable and interesting. They do the performance at the local shrine which is a 1 min car ride away. Very close. 

Amanoiwato Shrine is another location very prominent in folklore. We went on a short hike into the mountains to an incredible power spot. The rain and rushing rapids made the trek more intense. 

Unfortunately, our boat ride in the gorge was canceled due to heavy rains,

Overall

This was a spectacular location in the mountains. It does take a long time to get here. The roads here are windy and narrow if driving, but you will be rewarded with one of the most spiritual and impressive nature sites in all of Japan.
