Cancel/Refund Process

Do you have to cancel your flight first on the website and then do a refund request?
or can you just do the refund request and it will cancel as part of that request?

For an award booking I had to call to cancel, the mileage redeposit was instant. Had to email them some forms to get the taxes and fees refunded. Pretty inefficient process overall.
