Did you ticket? A few other suggestions, build your own - take to TPE (Via BR), or ICN (Via OZ), and buy an LCC for the last hour or two to NRT. It's not ideal, but you get the bulk of the butt in seat in a wide, well wined and dined seat. The tickets aren't usually more than 150-200.

why do you think business saver to ICN or NRT has better availability than to TPE in the peak of prime holiday season?

OZ is usually better at releasing space than BR. from LAX (Imagine it's the 380's worth of J and F). Right ow I see J and F on OZ almost all of Nov, then a break till the 12/26th - and almost all of January - Feb - March (ok granted that's after the holidays, but in typical LA m.o. show up fashionably late, and avoid all the awkward/contentious family moments).

Also, with UA, you really can't control the routing anymore. You (and the agent) HAVE TO take whatever it gives. Manually route will price out higher on the mileage requirement.
