If its TPE-ORD/YYZ/IAH/JFK, the second cabin, left side is looked after by a Chief Purser so the service is considerably better if you get a good one.

Yes it is a TPE YYZ flight. Last night there was empty window seats, on the left side but was filling up. I did book the seats by calling them up initially and they suggested the 3rd row on the first cabin. Well they said as front as possible as the rear seats are close to the galley they said. But I will take your advice and look to see if I can change to the second cabin now.

Honestly, L1' (the AP on the left side of the first cabin) are usually very good. They sit right next to the CP (L1), so they're usually pretty nervous about getting everything right.

And I often find that if L2 (FA on left side of the 2nd cabin) is a CP, they don't really know the service protocols that well because they're not used to doing the actual work. On a recent flight, they grabbed a bunch of CPs/DPs and downgraded them to APs to fill the slots. It was funny that none of them could figure out how to put up a bassinet. In the end, a trainee (a Male FA on his first training flight!), came from EY and put it up in a minute.

I've found choosing the side of the plane with less sun can make a small difference if in a window seat.
Not sure which side that is when flying TPE-ORD
Picked 9A, will try the smaller cabin.

If it is winter, TPE->ORD will be in darkness for nearly the entire flight. For summer, the left side of the plane is a bit better.

SunFlight.net - Day and Night Flight Map lets you plug in the flight city-pairs, length of flight, and dates and tells you the percentage of time you'll be in sunlight and fraction left/right.
wysiwyg, Cat88L3 and tr3k like this.

I got right side second cabin and the service was fantastic. One of the best I have seen for a long time. This was YYZ to TPE.

Related to this, I just booked an EVA itin on Orbitz and went to the EVA website after ticketing and added my UA star-gold number. It now says:

Frequent Flyer No.:
xxxxxxxxxx / United Airlines - MileagePlus / Star Alliance Gold

However, when I go to the Seat assignment, it wants to charge my for the seats I select. I thought seat selection was free for *Gold.

I may be wrong on *G. I was charged on Thai for seat selection. Eva don't charge for their Gold members for sure. I am sure I didn't pay for when I was silver last year too.

*G don't get any seat selection benefits. Pony up for the higher fare class to select seats free of charge.

*G does get seat selection on BR for sure if it's their own program. The same I was told on TG.

Perhaps I should clear it up, *G on the same program = BR Gold/Diamond. I refer to *G as in *G from partner *A airlines.

Yes I do understand that now. In my experience some airlines charge. Since I am in G with BR they didn't.
