Dress code for Opera in Prague

Hello eveyone,

I'm looking for some advice on dressing for the opera in Prague. We're going to see Madam Butterfly at the State Opera House whilst there this weekend, and I don't know how dressy I need to go. No one seems to get really dressed up in London these days, so I'm completely out of touch about what I should be wearing! Do I wear a LBD? I full length ball gown? A pair of jeans?!

Any advice would be hugely appreciated :p

I would guess you will see people in everything from jeans to ball gowns. I would wear something right in the middle.

FWIW We had already arrived in Prague last week and then found out we could get tickets to the opening night of the Dvorak Festival in the Rudolfinum, the Czech Philharmonic performing Dvorak and Schumann, including the former's New World Symphony. Traveling in summer with rollaboards and not having planned to attend a concert meant I didn't have so much as a sports jacket.

Mrs. Fredd had brought along an outfit adequate to be "in the middle" as the previous poster suggested by wearing a dressy top and dark pants. With my conservative sport shirt and beige dressy slacks, I was definitely in a small minority of males not attired in a jacket and tie, but I still managed to enjoy the concert immensely. :)

Likewise, on our third annual winter trip to Vienna a couple of years ago I gave up on packing the blue blazer and wore a dark sweater to both opera houses, but I'm old-fashioned enough even as a male to have felt a bit underdressed.

Yes, we saw a very few people in jeans but I think somebody who's "always in vogue" will want to be a bit dressier at the opera in Prague, even in summer. ;)

Enjoy! ^

Cheers,
Fredd

As stated before, as nice as you want, but many folks will come casually, in jeans. And no one will look askance towards those in jeans.

We saw Turandot and enjoyed the performance very much. Have fun!

I wore shorts when I went in 2006. Of course I was in the nosebleed section. :)
