We were in Amsterdam four years ago without a hotel reservation and were able to book the Amsterdam Hilton through the VVV (Tourist Office) at a rate of 100 Euros. Breakfast was not included. We had to pay about 20 Euros for parking since we had a car; we had to move it from the park and go lot where we had parked for the day.
We were excited because it was where John Lennon and Yoko Ono had their "bed-in" and we even stayed on the 7th floor - the same floor that they stayed on. The hotel was quite lovely. Our room was wonderful. We had a gorgeous view. Thanks all! Dawn |

We fly into AMS @ 8:30 a.m. The flight to BUD isn't until 10:15 a.m., but I'm not taking the chance--even though a Delta Rep told me it would be NO PROBLEM making the connection. She said she lived there for years and worked at the airport, but we both said, "no way, not chancing it." Especially since it is on a different airline (skyeurope).
So we'll be a week in BUD before coming to AMS. Our flight back to the states isn't until 10:15 a.m. on Nov 8th, so I think we should be fine, regardless of what hotel we are in....but it sounds like you may be suggesting that on the final night, stay at the AMS Airport Hilton just for the convenience....? I meant to say BUDAPEST, not AMSTERDAM!!!!
My bad....I was going to start a new post but hopefully this will suffice.
Okay, I'm doing a little research on a few things this morning and I find that the HILTON BUDAPEST is $176.74 USD (for two people) if I pay by credit card for the dates that I am holding an award--October 27-Nov 2 (we'll be at the Amsterdam Hilton from Nov 2 - 8). So, after taxes, that is $1,305. I don't want to beat a dead horse, but can I get just a couple opinions from others that would stay with the award or just pay the $1,305 and keep the award for a future trip. That is so close to my threshold and basically, that is $217.50 a night that we could pay and that includes taxes. Does anyone know if we would have a better chance at getting an upgrade if we used an award or if we paid the $176.74 a night. Has anyone been upgraded at this hotel when the rates were that low? I am not expecting a huge corner suite, but I sure would like access to the lounge and if I have a better chance of access by not using an award, I'll do it. I can get very cheap travel insurance to cover the money paid for the award if something happens and we can't go (under $100). Thanks....sorry for the error in the original post regarding the location. Dawn |
Enjoy Budapest
Its been two years since I've been there... have been to Hilton Budapest three times and if your a diamond then you'll get upgraded and have access to the lounge.
As for paying versus points.....you'll have an extra $1300 in your pocket. Don't know why you feel you need insurance for the award...awards can be cancelled. |
You may want to do a search on the Budapest Hilton & see how they are w/ upgrades/lounge access. Some of the international Hiltons aren't allowing lounge access (re: if Gold or Diamond status) unless you're booked on that level. Lot of reports on that in the last several months (and po'd top tiers about it).
Cheers. |
Trip insurance not for award....

If we go for the nonrefundable, pay it today rate of a total of $1,305 w/taxes, it is nonrefundable and that is why I would consider the trip insurance. I realize that awards do not carry penalties. Why pay in lieu of points? Well...I think I answered my own question. Most of the places out of the US are anywhere from $300-$700 per night. We typically go to Cabo in Feburary and those rooms go for nearly $400+ a night. We are also looking at Barbados in February and those rooms are going for $450 a night, so it is not as simple as having $1,305 in my pocket. If I planned to never travel again, I suppose I could look at it that way. It is really hard to use an award for anywhere in the world when the room rate is $176.74 (albeit, before taxes). I asked my husband last night and he said it was a no brainer--purchase the rooms and save the award for February! Okay, okay...will do. (grin) Dawn |
Painfully aware....

I don't think the lounge access is dependent on whether it's a cheap rate or an award, just whether you're on the exec level or not. I'd put in the notes request upgrade to exec level.
Also, when I stayed at the VIE Hilton (the Stadtpark one last year) I received an email in advance from the GM saying we're glad you're staying w/ us & I replied really looking forward to it, etc, and 'if possible' would appreciate being upgraded to the exec level 'if it was available'. I did get upgraded; I was Gold at the time. VIE was one of those where if you weren't on the EL you didn't get lounge access, so I was pretty happy about the upgrade. Good luck & enjoy your trip! I would save the points for Barbados, I doubt you will ever see a $200 rate there. ;)

The only thing worse than staying in a city and NON Hilton property would be to stay at a Hilton property and getting the "hotwire" or "priceline" rooms. I know some of you have been lucky in the past and some of you have even been upgraded, however, not a chance I want to take on vacation. Thanks.... Dawn |
