Vouliagmeni is very far from everywhere! A beach and three tavernas within walking distance of the conference and the nearest anything else a 15 minute taxi ride to town, grocery store, ... Hotel to train or airport was 45 minutes by taxi. Some complaints about how we were all captive.

I bought my train ticket at the Larissis station that morning, no problem, direct going, change on the way back, stayed one night, explored monasteries by taxi and town by foot. I stayed at a B&B near the footpath; another time I'd stay downtown - there's a main street lined with hotels and restaurants and even more on the intersecting streets. I liked the little town as much as the monasteries; it was a nice break but a lot of travel time.

Ouch! Good advice, going to book our tickets now.

By the way, I noticed that even direct Aegean flights (such as Athens-Santorini) aren't very cheap, at ~E 80 each way, PLUS E 13 in fuel surcharge.

Oh, is that so? I got flights from Athens to Rhodes for 19 euros per person (excluding taxes) on Aegean Air. But this was for June 2007 so mental note to book early, everybody!
