Springtime in Europe?
There's an old joke: this guy really likes the song "April in Paris". It's his dream. Finally, he gets to go to Paris in April, and it's terrible! Rain, cold, really lousy.
When he gets back to the States, he looks up the guy who wrote the song. "What ever were you thinkng? I went to Paris in April and it was really bad!" And the guy says, "Oh sure. It's not nice in Paris in April. You really want to go in May."
"So why did you write 'April in Paris' ?"
"Well, I needed a two syllable word. 'May' just didn't fit."
Ahem.
Well, I'm considering a trip next Spring, probably in April, maybe into May. I'm looking at Paris, Vienna, Budapest, who knows where else.
That 'joke' has been on my mind -- what should I expect the weather to be like in those areas at that time of year?

Well, weather is different every year... In gereral terms April in central Europe is famous for a mix of everything. The weather can change VERY quickly from warm sunshine to cool rain or freezing snow (and back). April is ok for travelling, but don't forget to bring a warm, rainproof jacket and/or umbrella.
April is a nice season for the Mediterranean if you want to walk around, see lots of places and sights, go hiking etc., perhaps sometimes even warm enough for the beach, but not yet too hot for activities. I prefer spring to summer for countries like Italy or Spain. But there are no guarantees for sunshine, there may be rainy, chilly days as well. Anyway, it's a lovely season with all those trees and flowers in bloom.
Keep in mind that the two weeks around Easter are considered high season, especially in the South.

We've done most of Europe in all seasons except summer. None of us wants to ever go there in summer.
Late March is our favorite time to go, though. Rarely is it too hot, cold, or too rainy. But then, we don't care for heat, either.

We do all our European travel in Spring and Fall, with varying results. Scotland and the Orkneys (April, 2005) cold and rainy. London and Wales (April, 2004) just fine. Rome in March- wonderful. We're willing to gamble with bad weather in return for lower prices and fewer crowds. As long as you have plenty of plans that don't require perfect weather, go for it.

We have an expression in Austria about the weather in April:
Austrian> April, April, der macht was er will!
English translation > April, April, he makes what he wants!
As some mentioned before, April is very unpredictable. It can be sunny,
and some moments later you have heavy snowfall. Typical weather in April.
Best months to tour middle and southern Europe are May and June.
Normally it's conveniently warm, and rainfall may be rare. Many years ago, we suffered on very high temperatures in May, this year we had a few days with 35C!!
