Small hotels in Rome

I am planning to spend a weekend in Rome soon. Can anyone recommend a nice, small hotel in town? Something like a charming B&B or boutique hotel would be great. Hopefully not more than EUR100-150 per night...?!

Consider:

I have never stayed but know the location is safe, convenient and fantastic for walking about during a short visit to Rome.

The best advice I can give you is to seek out on www.paginegialle.it and fill the fields "cosa" with hotel and "dove" with 00153...you will have some results of hotels and B+Bs in Trastevere area, among them La Cisterna..
Enjoy Rome

We stayed at the Hotel Napoleon (http://www.napoleon.it). The rates we got were much better than the ones posted on their site, although we booked directly through the site. It was an "Internet special". It's right by the Vittorio Emmanuel Metro station in a relatively quiet corner of Rome. I've since read on Fodor's that the are is frequented by prostitutes and drug dealers but if it was, they weren't very conspicuous. The hotel itself is nicely remodeled and the room rate includes a great continental breakfast. Front desk staff were friendly and helpful and spoke English.

For 4 nights, 2 rooms (a double, plus a smaller single room for my son) our total bill was about $1000. That was in early March. We'd definitely go there again.

Thanks a lot for the recommendations. Has anyone heard of the Domus Sessoriana Hotel? It seems to be part of the Monastery of the Basilica of Santa Croce, Piazza Santa Croce, and looks quite nice. Is this a good location or should I rather look at something near Trastevere, Spanish steps etc? We will only be there for 3 days and I wouldn't want to spend too much time in taxis or subways. So walking distance to either shopping or nightlife/restaurant areas would be perfect. It'll be my first visit to Rome... can't wait! http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif

Sorry I'm not much of a shopper when in Rome and rarely visit nightclubs. However, I have been dragged to expensive tourist aimed shopping in the Spanish Steps area and have heard that Trastevere is popular for clubbing. The Piazza S. Croce location may be out of the way if those are your destinations. If the hotel is a religious domus, it may have a curfew.

I am unfamiliar with the area you are considering having only visited nearby San Giovanni in Laterano during the day. I did not like the area but that may have been because it started to rain when we were there. Antonio will know and hopefully comment.

Recently I read that some formerly crime ridden areas south of Termini have improved and the Termini area is undergoing a renaissance.

Because I am biased toward ancient Rome, if it were my first, 3 day visit, I would stay in the historic center. This might work for you, too, as it would be central to SS/Trastevere. The historic center seems very safe for walking at night and you will see the most amazing sights along the way. Try taking different routes. I have never taken a taxi in Rome and lost weight because of all the walking. The public transport is great (watch for pickpockets) when your feet hurt.

Just returned from my 3rd trip to Rome earlier this month. HOTEL CISTERNA on Via Cisterna in Trastevere: large room 120 Euro. Ask for #60, which is a cabin-like penthouse. They have an elevator and very friendly staff. Trastevere is not so much about clubbing, but lots of bars and nightlife. Via del Pace near Piazza Navona is the best nightlife / bars / peoplewatching.

Another good thing about staying in Trastevere: if you are hoofing it to the Vatican Museums / Sistine Chapel first thing in the morning (which you should, the lines are notorious), this is a short 15-20 minute walk as opposed to Spanish Steps / Colosseum area.
