Adriatic help needed

My wife is all Pfizered out; my second Moderna shot should be sometime end of March/early April. If other circumstances allow, in June we are likely looking at a trip to Russia for about ten days and from then will look to go somewhere for about a week to lie on the beach and recover from the stress of the (what will be by then) preceding 16 months. If Italy opens its borders to Americans by then, it would be our destination of choice, but if not, we're going to have to look for alternatives. Our requirements are as follows:

- Non-stop flight from either Moscow or St. Petersburg and a relatively easy return flight to Chicago
- Pebbled beach preferred (strongly) to sandy
- Quiet and secluded preferred (extremely strongly) to typical touristy hotspots. One small exception would be if we end up going to Croatia, as we'd want to hit up Dubrovnik for a day or two (GoT fans).
- Budget is pretty flexible; as I understand, that area isn't the most expensive in the world, anyways, but let's call it $300/day for accommodations/food. I don't think there are many multinational chain hotels along the coast that fulfill our other requirements (have a decent stash of Hilton and Marriott points and I know there's a Sheraton on the outskirts of Dubrovnik which we've looked at but didn't like the beach there), so independent properties are OK. No apartments, want full service.

We've been trying to make something like this happen for at least seven years now with very underwhelming results. Went to Marina di Pisa in Italy (swayed by its relative lack of renown and a perfect-looking beach line - which, in fairness, was quite good) once and had a horrible time of it. Other years we simply hadn't managed to make it happen despite our best efforts.

Any help welcomed! https://pics3.city-data.com/forum/im...lies/smile.gif

If you want less touristy, central Dalmatian coast between Split and Sibenik would work better than Dubrovnik or Istria. Split airport has very good connections to Chicago. Usually an early morning flight to Frankfurt of Munich with a couple hour layover there and then a direct flight to ORD.

If you go to Dubrovnik, I would highly recommend the Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik. Nice hotel and excellent location right on the doorstep of old town. The central location is perfect for seeing the city/ GoT sites. Decent diamond treatment. I've received upgrades off season, but not in peak season due to full occupancy. With Covid, who knows... Sheraton is out of town and would be better for relaxation. For restaurants, we've enjoyed Konoba Jezuite at the top of the stairs for Cersei's walk of shame.

Look into Pula and Rovinj in Croatia

Thank you. Definitely want less touristy, so that sounds perfect.

Thank you for this, as well. I looked at the Sheraton as our main hotel, but didn't like the beach. Too many boats in close proximity.

Hi, I am planning on going to Croatia in June. Rovinj is an excellent choice with a heavy Italian flair. Check out the Monte Molini hotel. I stayed there on my first trip to the country and loved both the property itself and the location. The hotel is directly on the Adriatic, 10-15 minutes walking from the town center. I transited to Rovinj via Venice. From there is it a three hour drive. Alternatively, you can fly into Pula which is directly on the Istrian Peninsula.

For this trip, I am starting at the Brown Beach Hotel in Trogir, which is near Split. From there I am heading to the Lemongarden Hotel in the small town of Sultivan on Brac, a relatively short ferry ride from Split. You can continue on by Ferry directly to Dubrovnik from Brac.

In Dubrovnik I am staying at Villa Dubrovnik. However, at 600 euros plus per night it may be more than you are willing to pay. However, it is a stunning property with its own Vaporetto (Venetian water taxi) to take you to/from town. It may likely not be an issue in this time of Covid, but normally Dubrovnik is jammed with tourists in June. And staying slightly outside the old city suited us just fine. If we did not want to wait for the water taxi, it was a 20 minute walk to the old city.

You should also know that while Croatia has relaxed its entry requirements, they remain very specific. As stated on the US Embassy in Croatia page:

"Entry for tourism is permitted only with documentary evidence of an accommodation paid in advance and in full, prior to arrival at the border (The accommodation reservation alone is not sufficient to be permitted entry). Tourists must have a negative PCR test result not older than 48 hours from the time of the swab to crossing the border."

As we will be coming directly from the USA, I am still trying to figure out how to secure a PCR test result such the actual test administration itself has not aged by more than the 48 hour limit required for entry.

I'm afraid this is outdated information. Currently NO tourists are allowed into the country. However, considering that without tourism, the country might as well declare bankruptcy, I'm sure by June this will change, one way or another. The rule you quoted was valid for last year's tourist season.

My source, the "US Embassy in Croatia" webpage is dated 3/16/21. See here:https://hr.usembassy.gov/covid-19-information-2/

Further, several travel agent friends have noted that the update as I quoted was being widely distributed as of last Friday, 3/19/21. So, based on these I believe the information may have changed from last December. Finally, to wit, I contacted one of my hotels and they quoted the same information as I want to make sure I am properly armed with documentation on entry. Now, or course, these rules are of this week. As you note, requirements may change further by June depending on the virus situation at that time.

I am Croatian, and was looking at the Croatian version of the same directive, which was published on the 23rd of March. I just thought that providing Croatian text would bear no value here, so I gave the link to the English - albeit out of date - version of the same. If you want to check Croatian text (and use Google translate), it's right here: https://www.koronavirus.hr/privremen...ijelaza-rh/733.

I did that and found this text to be extremely limited and open to interpretation. Would be a lot more helpful if it expressly stated that entry for reason of tourism is prohibited...

Look at it the other way around, it never says that entry for reason of tourism is allowed. Last year's version (during the tourist season, before the 2nd wave) explicitly listed tourism as a valid reason.

I know this thread has been all about Croatia but I wanted to address the beginning of your post; that you plan on traveling to Russia. Russia is not open to Americans. https://ru.usembassy.gov/covid-19-information/

Obviously this is subject to change, but from what I've heard from friends over there and those that work in travel, they do not plan on opening to Americans for a bit...

I have dual citizenship and a residence there and so does my wife (along with family), so not an issue.

Interesting. Why would the U.S embassy in Croatia explicitly mention tourism on their website, then?
